    Dreamboat Rebuild Rebuild

I've long suspected you are operating a chop shop and trafficking in hot canoes out of that so-called workshop of yours. How else to explain the endless parade of canoes passing through it, often leaving with their hulls repainted different colors and customized to the point where the true...

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

Seems I've stirred up a hornets' nest. I did not know the love of the J-stroke ran so deep.

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

Some folks are sensitive to cedar dust. Suggest you wear a mask. Sorry to get political. ;)

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

This class (sponsored by my local canoe club) was three hours long. I ended up being the only student.

Care to elaborate? I really don't know a thing about them.

    Richmond, VA river accidents

Sounds like the two tubers were sharing one tube. They would have little or no chance of steering to shore in that kind of flow and probably didn't see the dam until it was way too late. I'm guessing the paddleboarders in the group were not experienced, either. Sad. Surprised this was not...

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

Yes, you are describing exactly what this guy was showing me. He insisted that the extra lift (before the pry) is how ACA wants its certified instructors to teach it. I don't get it either.

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

Well the demise of the J-stroke from the perspective of the ACA apparently is somewhat exaggerated because the J-stroke is still referred to in the Level 2 and successive course literature. https://americancanoe.org/wp-content/uploads/documents/sei-courses/l2_erc_skills.pdf "Forward (w/...

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

Not to worry, yknpadler, nobody is telling you that you cannot use the J-stroke. The ACA simply doesn't teach it (according to this instructor). On the other hand, if they did come for your J-stroke I gather they would definitely have to pry it (off the gunnels) from your cold-dead hands (to...

RIP J-Stroke: ACA No Longer Teaches the J-Stroke (EDIT: Or Does It?)

I was paddling today with an ACA certified instructor. He was telling me the ACA no longer teaches the J Stroke (he'd never even heard of the Canadian stroke). Instead of the J Stroke, they only teach the what he called the Stern Pry, which is I would call the River-J aka the Goon Stroke --...

    Flaky epoxy

Looking at the photos again, this looks exactly like the varnish failure I had a few years back when I was refinishing my cedar stripper. I was using Helmsman over epoxy. I don't know if it was a preparation issue, a weather issue, recoating too soon or bad batch of Helmsman, but after 2-3...

    Flaky epoxy

Perfectionists hand sand. I use a random orbit with a soft interface pad on the exterior (and, truth be told, interior as well).

    Flaky epoxy

Why did the outfitter skim coat the entire boat with epoxy? If the goal was simply too refresh the finish and hide cosmetic surface scratches, going straight to varnish would have been a better solution IMO because once a skim coat of epoxy was applied it was going to need to be varnished over...

Do you see a lot of wildlife on canoe?

I have seen countless mammals, birds and reptiles from my canoe but my favorite moment was paddling out of Lobster Lake on Lobster Stream in Maine where we encountered a cow moose and her calf. While I was taking this picture of mama, I heard a noise next to the canoe and looked down to see a...

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

I would not risk it. You will be fiberglassing and epoxying the outside of the hull while it is still on the forms (you may also be applying an epoxy seal coat depending on whose methods you are following). Epoxy can and will seep through very small cracks and gaps between the strips; and...

    My first wanigan experience

Love wanigans on trips where portages are short or non existent! His cooler design inspired me to build my "NYETI" cooler -- although I changed the dimensions. Still going strong despite swimming Thoreau's Rapids on the West Branch...

    Dreamboat Rebuild Rebuild

Canoe measurements are a can of worms. Most manufacturers never say how they measure so even something as simple as width isn't so simple. Is it measured from outwale-to-outwale? Inwale-to-inwale? If you measure hull-to-hull do you measure inside-to-inside or outside-to-outside)? Likewise...
