    Resin, Hardener Age

Before throwing it out. Try a small amount, and see it hardens. In my experience, old hardener and resin seem to kick over much faster, than new stuff. I helped a friend glass a hull. He had West System epoxy. The old epoxy, kicked shortly after mixing. Luckily he had some newer stuff, that...

    Ashes Solo Trip build

I've had the same problem, and as stripperguy states, varnish will cover it. Adding epoxy, will not add strength. Varnish will make it disappear. Jim

A Short BWCA trip, with a stripper, Cedar that is

No firearms. But Grouse season was on, and I did hear shotguns. I'm thinking I should buy a non resident Grouse license! as I did see a few. Might be as much fun as fishing?

The OR, stands for Owner Responsibility. It's the State's way of saying they don't want to be responsible for load capacity beings it's a Home built canoe . I hate putting numbers on my canoes! Iowa regulations.:(

A Short BWCA trip, with a stripper, Cedar that is

I've learn not to rely on my fishing luck, but enjoy going through the motions ! Thinking next time, I'll pick up some fillets at Zups, but still buy the license. Pretty hard to beat a good shore lunch! I had planned to do some land based exploring. Next time ! Thanks guys ! Jim

A Short BWCA trip, with a stripper, Cedar that is

Sorry for the title ! Trip started Sept. 30th. drove 9 hrs to Ely, and spent a restful night at Canoe Country Outfitters, ally apartments. Great people, I've dealt with them, for over 30yrs. Oct. 1, I was up early, and on the road to Lake One. Saw a Black wolf along the road, close to the...

    Sponsons below the waterline

I'm not an engineer ! I believe, Sportspal/Radisson meant for those Sponsons, to add flotation, to an aluminum hull, in the case of a capsize, not to add capacity. They may have also wanted more stability, by widening their hull. An aluminum hull. without flotation, would sink. As Chip...

    New seat design.

Here is a link (I hope) to my original seat thread. canoe seat I used the same dimensions, except I arch the braces, using the same curve as the rails. As far as an improvement ? I wouldn't say it's not huge, but I will make all my seats this way, and plan to replace some of my old ones. I...

Inherited strip canoe on mold mid build. Stripping started at the football and moved toward gunwales?

What makes you think the original builder started at the middle, and worked towards the shearline ? To me it appears to be built in the normal manner, shearline to the keel. Jim

Inherited strip canoe on mold mid build. Stripping started at the football and moved toward gunwales?

Great score ! I'd love finishing that hull. Looks nicely built. I will make a guess, that it is a Bear Mountain design, The use of a " Box beam " strong back, and the forms high enough, the stems are above the strongback. The stair stepped shear, and stems, are indicative of Ted Moore's designs...

    Cooking Fish

The Boy Scouts, taught me to cook egg and bacon, in a paper sack ( Lunch size bag ). Place the bacon in the bottom of the bag ( two strips ) and then the egg. Roll up the top of the bag, and poke a green stick into the fold, and suspend, over coals, not flame. So long as the paper was coated...

    New Bottom Application

If using a roller, I'd suggest the "cigar" type foam rollers, a 4" would be just fine. Be sure it is rated for varnish. Then tip it with a quality "Jen" foam brush.

    Leaving firewood at camp

In the BWCA, we always leave some fire wood, at the fire grate, as your pic shows. It's a courtesy thing. I believe the no trace applies to non designated campsites. There are plenty of slouches out there, and that is too bad !

    Drawknife sharpening

That is nifty. I made and used a more crude but effective, jig to sharpen planer knives. This is far superior ! Thanks for posting. I have a few draw knives to sharpen. Jim

    Pre-Packing, Bad Idea

I'm guilty of TOO much gear too ! The only time it really bothers me, is Portaging ! Da ! Oh Food ! I really need to cut back ! A guy shouldn't gain weight, paddling all day and portaging ! I keep wanting to pack a hammock, to lounge in at camp, a pair of small binos, and way too many...

    First canoe build

I had no troubles with skin reaction. but yes, Cedar can be detrimental to your lungs !!! I picked up a full face mask, that I will try the next time cutting strips. There is one out there that has an air pump and fastens to your waist. Definitely worth it if you plan to cut a lot of cedar !
