Stowing a painter line to the top of a flotation tank.

I thought that this might be of interest to anyone who has an interest in stowing a coiled painter line on top of the flotation chambers using the vent plug. This provides a low profile and secure place to coil the painter without drilling any holes. I used the loop portion of a 3/4” Mini...

    Painter line end treatment?

How about the plastic rope ends? https://www.knotandrope.com/collections/rope-clamps-ends I have never had the opportunity to use the but they look nice and secure. Personally, I like whipping the ends with waxed or unwaxed thread.

    handware

I have had great luck with the Atlas 282 Temres gloves. Warm, surprisingly breathable, durable and good grip. I have only used them for canoe and kayak paddling, not poling.

    Solo portage pack, two-piece style

The standard style packs I made are the same size and are configured the same as this one. I am able to carry a Wenonah MN II with a collar style portage pad and the pack does not interfere.

    Solo portage pack, two-piece style

The I just got a two-piece solo portage pack completed. To be clear, the two piece style is not my idea. It came to my attention from Ostrum’s pack. This is my take on what I think would work well for what I want from a pack. Features: Each pack is 15” high x 18” wide by 12” deep. 420 denier...

    Two new portage packs

Thank you very much. I had a home Elna sewing machine for many years, but now have an industrial Juki DNU 1541 S. Full disclosure: I have been sewing since my teen years (61 now) and had a sewing business for thirty years.

    Two new portage packs

I just got two new portage packs finished and ready for spring travel. My goal was to make lighter versions of the packs I had made before and make some minor additions and corrections. The 420 denier packcloth in this version saved two pounds over the 1000 denier Cordura packs. The bottom and...

Mourning the loss of independent outfitter shops

I agree totally. We are fortunate enough to have a wonderful specialty paddling store in our area of Minnesota called Clear Waters Outfitting. https://www.cwoutfitting.com/ They are promoters of paddling as well as sellers of paddling gear.

    Wanted: Roof Rack

I know it is more expensive, but look at a SportsRig Trailer. The canoe, etc. that you haul is much more aerodynamic, there is no chance of the rack coming unattached and the mounts are much lower. Best of luck.

    Portable Water Filtration & Purification

Katadyn Pocket Filter with a carbon filter on the outfeed hose and a Sweetwater Siltstopper on the infeed hose. Very reliable and produces great tasting water. It is heavier than most, but has never failed.

    Lightweight Camp Shoes

Salomon Jungle Ultra Boots for paddling and portaging. For camp, I use any New Balance, Saucony, etc. trail runners that are light, pack small, dry quickly and have enough support in case I needed them in the canoe or on the trail. Happy New Year!

    What's your best dehydrated meal?

Our favorite is very simple: dehydrated red pasta sauce (Newman’s Own is our favorite) and angel hair pasta. We use two pots, but it can be made in one. Add some fresh or packaged Parmesan cheese, pepperoni or rehydrated ground beef (if you like) and it is very satisfying and filling. It cooks...

    Keewaydin duffel bag

The “throat” isn’t a drawstring closure is it? I picture a 14” x 36” cylinder with one end closed. The other end has grommets with a drawstring or military-style closure. The 12” throat is an internal sleeve with a drawstring casing and drawstring coming out a single grommet. The outer grommets...

    Canoe Portage Pad/Collar For Sale

Canoe portage pad or collar for sale. $30.00 OBO This is the alpha version which was used for ten days this past Fall in the BWCA for about forty portages. It worked very well. In the beta version, I am making some minor changes in the foam pattern and adding non-slip fabric on the outer sides...

    Personal worst

The ice is on the lakes, the boats and gear are stowed away, and another season is wrapped up. We paddled 114 different bodies of water, not a personal best. Our mileage was just shy of our personal best, because of a late Spring and not much of a Fall. That being said, we collected over 1500...

    Redbull Urban Portage

Great job, you posted a good time. It is nice to hear you had fun adventure and challenge. I am not sure you could pack the racing boats light enough, especially in any rough water. They might do well even with the self-bailers and spray decks they employ. I am sure others could attest to the...
