    Holiday Equipment Deals

I just bought a tarp from Cook Custom Sewing and they are still offering the 20% discount. Today may be the last day for it.

Fly rod and Rod tube winter project

We're in luck boys and girls, we can still find the good fishing by canoe tripping. Nice rod and tube. I never thought about a three weight. I could see where it would make for a nice light presentation, among other things.

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

I had some flying squirrels show up at my bird feeder at “Canoe Camp One” my cottage in the Poconos.

    New project... 17.5' Atkinson Traveler

Looking good Patrick, do you have any plans for it's first trip? I was wondering what you were going to do with the form. I don't think Rollin offers the kit to build them anymore so they will probably be rare in the future. I think it was very generous of you and a good choice to donate it to...

Another new camping trend - individual tents

Unfortunately this is a problem when everyone has their own tent, but the group still should try to make sure everyone has a decent spot. It sounds like the opposite had taken place on that trip. There are ways to make yourself feel better in a situation like that. The easiest thing is to do...

    The perils of minimum sanding

That's a good thing Alan. I've seen at least one of your boats after an extended trip, and if scratches were something you worried about I think you would have had a break down.:) People who are skilled enough to build and/or repair their own boats are less likely to worry about it. How you use...

Another new camping trend - individual tents

I can see why this is a trend. As we get older we don't always sleep as well as we once did, and over the years may have had some bad experiences sharing a tent with others. Plus, as we get older we might tend to snore more than we once did. We may also have to get up more to relieve ourself...

    The perils of minimum sanding

It's liberating to not have to worry about scratching your boat, but for those fortunate enough to have a pristine boat there is a desire to keep it that way. Plus, if you are trying to minimize scratches, you will also be minimizing the chance of more serious damage to the hull itself.

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I enjoy a campfire and would hate to see a permanent ban. I understand temporary bans during extreme dry weather, and according to the article dry conditions are more widespread and common than they used to be and may get worse in the future. My take away from the article is, if I were planning...

Sultan to Gogama: A Saga of Seven Rivers

Yeah, I guess if you were already carrying the boat it would be natural to keep on going. I think it's great that you and your dad are doing big trips like this, keep it going.

Sultan to Gogama: A Saga of Seven Rivers

Great TR. Entertaining and I think it will be very helpful for anyone doing a trip in that area. On that day 6 portage when you were near the end in that muck, couldn't you have dragged or pushed the boat instead of carrying it? I haven't done much deep muck work and I'm not one to drag my...

Bad back and purchasing a new lightweight canoe

I find a higher seat to be more comfortable for me, as far as my back goes. In the last boat I bought the seats were about 9.5", I raised them to 11.5 and it was much better for my back. Maybe not as nice as the 14" ones in my wood canvas boats, but high enough to allow me to get my feet under...

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

I'm talking about leaning into the turn, like you would do on a bicycle. This would be "inside carving" as described in Tom Fosters videos. I agree with you and Ykn Paddler that an outside lean can turn sharper, but this is because it is a pivot and not a carve. In my view a pivot will turn...

Two nights in the rainy, cold St. Regis Canoe Area, ADKs

As long as your gear stays dry and you have a tent, tarp and the ability to make a fire, you can still look forward to being warm and dry in the evening. Paddling in the rain may or may not be unpleasant depending on other weather conditions, but the knowledge that you will end up being warm...

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing. By "outside turn" do you mean leaning into the turn but away from your paddle side? That's what I'm doing. At any rate I think the more you lean the easier you will turn regardless of which way you lean. Leaning into a turn gives me a better...

Paddling in the wind, which way do you lean?

Like I said in my previous post, this discussion is more about using your hull to facilitate directional control and that is exactly what you are doing by holding your boat level. I spent the last 35+ years leaning away from the wind, which made me work harder to keep my bow where I wanted it.
