    La Voga Veneta

It's an interesting concept to propel a canoe while standing with a long paddle attached to the boat. When my lake thaws out I'm gonna strap a paddle to an end of my pole and attach that to my gunnel and see what happens.

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

I never used a large solo, but I've tripped solo in 17' tandems a lot. All of the you tubers I watch trip solo in tandems. I don't see the advantages to tripping from a centralized position in a solo boat. Most of the you tubers I watch are paddling backwards from the bow seat, except Adam...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I had a strip built 20' tandem sea kayak one time. I bought it on a Friday, flipped it on Saturday and returned it on Sunday. To be fair, I think the foam I used for the seats was too thick, making for a high center of gravity. My wife, who was with me at the time swore to never get into it...

US dugout canoes as old as the Pyramids

There was a dugout canoe found on a natural pond (Mud Pond) about 1 mile behind my house in Pa. It was estimated to be 400 years old and is now in a museum in the state capital in Harrisburg. Supposedly there were almost 20 of them found in Pa, mostly in the Poconos. Surprisingly none along the...

Charity paddles- what length do you think?

Looking good. From what I can see, I wouldn't be concerned about those knots causing a problem. Also, all else being equal, I would probably keep the lightest ones for myself.

Charity paddles- what length do you think?

I was thinking a cowboy hat and bolo tie and fancy cowboy boots. I think flannel might be too casual, but I didn't you can get a "dress" one.

Charity paddles- what length do you think?

I'd go with 60 inches or close to it. I think that's a good traditional length. I don't know what you should charge. If it was to benefit the starving children I'd go on the cheap side. I don't know what the they are going to do with the proceeds, but if it's to support themselves I'd go high...

    La Voga Veneta

Interesting thread Alex, and good for you getting to "row" one. It seems to me that with only one oar you would have to use a sculling action, but because it sets on an oar lock I guess it's rowing. The big advantage I see is the leverage you get from that long oar, which is probably very well...

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

Nick, I hope you still get some time on the water. I use my six foot paddle quite a bit when poling. I don't do the windmill technique either. My poles are wood with a shoe on one end only, so that's the only end I get wet. If I come to a short deep stretch I may stick with the pole, using it...

I hope you don't ding it up like the last one.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I was in my 20 footer when I invented that. You should see my roach clip.

Here is another benefit of a traditional straight shaft single blade.

New Swift Tandem - Lavieille 17-6

I have no problem soloing my 17,18, and 20 foot boats. With a bow light trim they all turn easy, with a flattish trim it depends on the boat.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

After decades of responsible drinking and decades of responsible padding I recently decided to combine the two. I enjoy it so much I've lost my desire to drink unless I'm paddling. The key is moderation. CHEERS

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

That looked like a great trip. It must be nice to have some like minded paddlers near by. Just carve yourself a six foot paddle and give it a try. I was introduced to it by an ex Maine Guide up in Ak. back in 91' and have been at it ever since. I always have a six footer with me as a second...

    Ein bisschen German freesyle

In another video he said the 16' Prospector is their most popular boat. It makes me wonder why if two of their best sellers are Prospectors and Prospectors are their only boats with recurved stems, why don't they design recurved stems in more of their boats. I personally wouldn't spend a lot of...

    Ein bisschen German freesyle

I'm a fan of that move too for getting over beaver dams. I've only been able to do it without the boat stopping when going downstream. Other wise my goal is to get the boat far enough onto the dam to be able to step right out onto it without having to climb over gear. I've done it in my...

New Swift Tandem - Lavieille 17-6

Swift has other boats that have three that they call Combi boats. I guess the center seat on this new boat isn't positioned to solo from. Their 17' Prospector has three seats and it looks like it should work for three people also, but its optimum load is 100 lbs. less at 650 lbs. So they did...
