The Tangerine Dream arrived early! (New Hemlock SRT)

Just stumbled upon this thread. Scary stuff. I'm not a serious whitewater person but I've run plenty of Class I like that. The idea of an entrapment after a hull collapse hadn't occurred to me as a kneeler. Regarding a kickaway seat, Wenonah aluminum seat drops have the wood sitting on the...

    La Voga Veneta

Yeah I wouldn't actually want a curved hull myself- I also like to switch sides periodically and conditions vary as you said. Mostly a thought exercise.

    La Voga Veneta

You're probably right in your reasoning there. But Marc Ornstein designs his boats, and we have some excellent boatwrights who make their own strippers and composite boats on this forum.... I wonder how long it took the Venetians to nail down the sweep on the gondola.

    Lets make some paddles

Yeah, that ash log I snagged was definitely a traffic hazard being in the right of way/shoulder. Regarding your osage orange, I've heard some say that knots like that can be filled with epoxy. Seems like if it were right next to a shaft it could be ok structurally, but I imagine they'd be a...

Nice! You could fit a large dog in that cockpit with you.

What do you think about the idea of having vendor forums?

My knee-jerk reaction is against this idea. I think the lack of commercialism on this forum is increasingly unique on the internet. Obviously all should be welcome and new members aren't bad (we need a critical minimum to keep the lights on), but think our relatively low number of members...

    La Voga Veneta

Thanks for that additional historical info, Chip! I'm certainly no expert so I'm glad to have others chime in. I see that there are still a few Venetian solo rowers who use an oar on each side (one can find them on Youtube), but still standing and facing forward. But no one's got an...

    Lets make some paddles

Gorgeous work, really enjoying this thread! I'm looking forward to attempting my first paddle when I can find the time and workspace. I've been contemplating what lumber to use, and you previously added sycamore to my list of potentials, Patrick. I've been playing around with scavenged...

Of course it popped into my head after I tried to start thinking about something else. It's a WS Manteo. This isn't my listing but there are nice pics of the chines here. Don't see many a canoe with chines like this! https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/882733917154330/

Interesting. We have a Wilderness Systems kayak in the family from the early days. I can't remember the model name, but it predates the Pungo - it would have been bought late 90s? It sounds like the opposite of the Chesapeake. Durable plastic, 13ft, hard chines and a deep vee hull...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

That is some golden info right there, thanks. Reinforces my inclination to keep my blacklite off rocky creeks. Also reinforces what others have said about my white gold Bell, but I might still stick to Royalex for bony creeks. Guess I should have ordered my blacklite with a gelcoat....the IXP...

I'm not familiar with the Chesapeake. The others I've heard of but never seen in person, let alone paddled. I see Mohawks for sale around here periodically, but not solos.

    What are you reading?

Undaunted Courage has been sitting in my 'to read' shelf for a while. Maybe 2025 is the year I get to it.

Canoe Art: Paintings, Sketches, Sculpture, Architecture

Cool to have an image of geology that's changed in your lifetime. Should I comment that the guy allegedly paddling upstream looks like he's rowing, or that he might as well pole up anyhoo? :)

    La Voga Veneta

La Voga Veneta (This is very much related to canoeing, I promise!) I first went to Venice in 2022. Of course, for a boat-minded person the city is quite a destination, despite the rampant over-tourism and accompanying problems (never mind that it’s washing away into the sea thanks to motorboat...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

1000% agree, Glenn. A Swift isn't in my future unless I come across a used one at a very good price. And I baby my Phoenix as much as possible while still using it to trip with.

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Sometimes, the creek closest to you is just bony a lot of the time. With used boats bought at reasonable prices, the wear and tear is worth it to me to be on the water for more of the season. That said, I do try not to abuse them, but to get better, one has to do some scraping and bumping from...

    What are you reading?

@Robin Trap Lines North is by Stephen W Meader? Growing up we had a little one-room library with loads of old cloth-bound classics - Hardy Boys and all that. They also had 'The Black Buccaneer' by Stephen W Meader. I read that one every summer and loved it. Eventually I got a copy as a...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

I presume Millbrook layups are among the toughest of the lighweight composites, given they seem to specifically make whitewater boats. I wish they still made something a little more trip-ready in those layups....like the Coho or similar. I supposed IXP fits the bill as well? Tuffstuff and...

Yes....I guess you and I have a weakness for uni-dino-corn-a-saur poling boats, eh? I'm continually on the lookout for a boat that poles well, will stand up to rocks, isn't a pig (Heron) or a whirlygig (Souhegan) to paddle solo on the flats, and is light enough for easy cartopping and portaging...
