Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

I was talking with a customer yesterday and said I wasn’t going to go to the post office because I had to deal with the fresh snow storm we had. He is in Brazil and wrote back that he had no concept of snow but it sounds terrible. I had a good laugh at that as I love the snow. I didn’t tell him...

    Hand Layup or Vacuum

I believe the vacuum method gives a better cloth to resin ratio and hence I bit lighter weight in the end. But for one or two boats the setup is quite an investment. Jim

Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

I haven’t had to shovel yet this year on the coast, but we do have some snow on the ground. Since I don’t have pressure from a job anymore I can shovel at my convenience. I don’t mind the snow that’s why we moved to Maine. Jim

Winter paddle and poling through ice

I don’t think I would call the rot, Al. It just looks like reaction in the wood from the steel screw. The rest of the wood looks in good shape even though it broke. Jim

Winter paddle and poling through ice

Looks almost magical. Too bad about your pole but the shoe was saved and can be refitted. Jim

    Troubles from China

I never said it wasn’t possible. I actually have a sailing canoe or two. I sold a couple of sailing rigs with Lee boards at the WCHA assembly last July. I was sailing my Old Town years ago with my wife and a friend had a good press of canvas too and the mast broke. Familiarity with the canoe and...

    Troubles from China

I would totally learn what your new canoe can do and handle and be completely comfortable in all conditions before attempting to rig a sail on it. My two cents. Jim

    Winter pants

Working on boats on the waterfront in winter is no fun. I wore a pair of the insulated coveralls most of the winter. Not the Carhart they were too warm not sure what the brand was I wore and worked them till they were tattered, definitely got my money’s worth. I still have a pair but I don’t...

Antenna interference of different cartopped canoe materials

I was concerned that the canoe would block the ez-pass link when going through a toll but haven’t noticed a problem yet. Jim
