    Moose

Going out on a three or four day moose hunting trip this weekend, pretty sure nothing like that will happen.

Inherited strip canoe on mold mid build. Stripping started at the football and moved toward gunwales?

I'm not sure what the problem is from the pictures, but I'll take a stab at it. If you run a long strip or flexible piece of wood along the gunwale line, are there any areas that are not covered by strips? If not, just draw a pencil line and then cut the gunwale line. If there are areas with...

Video of 3 nights at a small lake in Maine

I see you're still doing a pretty good job of packing the grub into you, lol, I'm jealous of that one pan mega breakfast.

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

Yes, the idea is to give it to the Outers program when we finish. Boreal, funny story told to me on Friday. One of my colleagues overheard the grade nines talking, they were saying that the teachers were nice to them because they had to be, it was part of the job. One of the kids piped up and...

That's a really good idea. I had measured the the two stations on either side of the centre, and they were around 33.5.

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

Many years ago, I acquired a set of plans from Carrying Place called the Wilderness Express. The fella told me they were essentially a copy of the Chestnut Pal. I build several of them, ranging in length from 16 to 17 feet. I found the 16 footer to be a good solo, but unless you had two...

    Wood identification.

My first thought was basswood, it's quite white, but I have seen very little basswood in my life. A cottonwood or poplar makes a lot of sense. That wood has been in the shop forever, I'm the first guy to pull it down, mostly because the kids have already used all the white pine. I should be...

    Wood identification.

So I'm teaching woodworking again, probably going to build a canoe with the senior class. I have three massive pieces of wood I can't identify. Two are 14 feet long, 22 inches wide and sixteen inches wide, the other one is the one in the picture. Clear, no knots, lighter than hardwood, heavier...

That's quite a drive you have planned, I have no advice other than take lots of food and make sure the spare tire is good.

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

I think it might be the airplane mode giving you trouble, as I have never had a problem in areas where there is no cell service. I usually keep my phone turned off all day, I have a dedicated camera, and I turn it on at night to send and receive messages.

What is your least favorite portage?

Blue Steel Layup Inspection / Repair Advice

That sounds weird. I have only seen that happen when someone used polyester resin on top of epoxy. The polyester would not adhere to the epoxy at all. However, epoxy sticks to everything.

Novacraft Tufstuff completely worn down hull restore

I had a hull looked very similar, maybe worse. It was expedition tuff stuff, the gel coat was quite thick, so left big holes when it chipped off. I filled the holes with thickened epoxy, sanded the entire bottom, then made the canoe two tone, as shown in the pics.

Miscellaneous Ramblings From My 13,500 Mile North American Tour

It was their cover of Lou Reeds Sweet Jane that originally propelled them to local fame as I'm sure you know. It is music of a particular era of my life, and I ha ent really listened to it for a few years, but will rectify that next week probably.

Miscellaneous Ramblings From My 13,500 Mile North American Tour

Wow, wasn't aware the Cowboy Junkies were still touring. Saw them the last time they were in Thunder Bay. I've always been a huge fan, hope they put on a good show!

Has anyone been around the Whitney Wilderness Area this season?

Gentlemen, I grew up in the air force, my dad was a Warrant Officer in the submarine detection game. I have strong respect for all former and current military members. However, I sense this conversation might take us into areas not frequently discussed on this canoe site, mainly the political...
