    Chesuncook camping fees

Unless I'm mistaken, recalling my experience when building a camp for a client on Caribou Lake, which is essentially the southwest arm of Chesuncook Lake and accessed from Ripogenous Lake and Dam, one doesn't pass a North Maine Woods gate when arriving at Rip Dam. Shortly before Rip Dam, one...

Knudsen Knupak canoe portage frames and bags for sale in Vermont

I know these portage frames have been discussed here in the past. I'm not associated with the seller but thought there may be some interest to some on the forum. https://vermont.craigslist.org/app/d/bristol-canoe-portage-packs-hard-to-find/7772320968.html

A La Mer du Nord 2025

Thanks for posting this. I got a laugh out of your comment. That and my rudimentary French are enough to enjoy the FB postings.

    Olympics Canoe or Kayak

I'll be avidly watching the C-1 events. In my youth I paddled a Berry C-1 regularly on the Lehigh River, in northern PA. And practiced the English Gate sequence in pools and ponds! I even paddled that boat in the ocean off South Bristol, ME, surfing the tidal rollers at the mouth of the Johns...

How to set up the canvas stretcher

Here's an image that illustrates the suspension/guy lines at each end. Keeps the envelope vertical and allows you to adjust the height of the canoe/canvas off the floor for easy access. The orange ratchet straps allow for easy vertical adjustment. The side clamps are just holding the envelope...

How to set up the canvas stretcher

That’s probably the most secure method. I slide a piece of 1/2” cpvc plumbing pipe into the doubled over canvas before clamping. Never slips. Probably a 1/2 x 1/2 square strip of scrap wood in the fold might work even better.

How to set up the canvas stretcher

My setup. Anchored at two large vertical support posts in my barn. If you're using standard stud walls as the anchor points, I would attach a 2x4 horizontally on at least four 2x4 studs with lag screws. Then attach your canvas setup with a yoke at one end and a come-along at the other. I set...

    Things you've lost or misplaced on a canoe trip . . .

Like Stripperguy, I carefully left a brand new pair of sunglasses about 20' southwest of the Paul Smith's College public launching dock. Now I just gotta remember to bring a dive mask next time to locate them for the next trip starting there. I deftly removed my cap in order to don the PFD...

Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

Thanks for posting. Thought provoking for me since my usual method is to throw gear into my backpack without a great deal of thought... though for a 30 day trip I would likely be more thorough!

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

Thank you Glenn, and all others for your kind comments! I learned a lot on this project since the repairs and fabrication of new parts was more extensive than on previous canoes, but most of all I learned something about patience. There were many family and business obligations that put the...

Folbot: Fix, Experiment or Set Free?

I feel your pain. I have a vintage folding kayak, a Pionier 540G tandem which my Dad bought in the 1950's. We had many family adventures in it, especially in Maine and the Chesapeake Bay. Sadly its skin is old and dry but the frame is intact and a technical wonder of wood and brass fittings...

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

Yep, I think you may be right. I resisted green for a long time since there are many green canoes out there, but this is really striking in appearance, especially with the bright new Ash outwales, and relatively light colored interior for contrast. I'm sure the outwales will darken over time...

Allagash Loop. What’s your preferred direction?

Could you expand a bit on the Loop? I'm assuming you mean Chesuncook-Allagash-Chamberlain-Mud Pond- Umbazooksus-Chesuncook. If so, I'll be anxious to read opinions too, as I am pondering a couple of adventures in that area that include the Mud Pond Carry.

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

The long project is finished! I picked her up in Richmond VA, and here's how she looked when I arrived home: In the barn along with the completed Willow in slings, and the filled-canvas Chestnut Chum on the rack: And now: I will look forward to having her in the water, as soon as the...

Music for the drive to, during, or the drive back from canoe trips?

In 1966, at the age of 14, I went on my first real mountain trip to the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, New Hampshire. We spent a week traversing all the summits of the range. In those days the only viable radio in the car was Top 40, AM radio. FM was barely a "thing" yet and so...

Glenn's Happy National Limerick Day header

I appreciate Glenn's 'Happy National ..... Day headers! So, how about we give a limerick a try? I'll start. My long-term canoe project nears its close, And the details have kept me on my toes, The fact is.... I'd rather be tripping, With water from my paddle dripping, But once I get out...

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

Thanks Bob. Yes, BRG was probably the coveted color for a MGB or Sprite when I was a kid! I think one more coat of color before I install the outwales, then another carefully lapping paint onto the junction of outwales & hull to seal. The outwales will get one more full varnish coat all...

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

Getting close now. 4 coats of primer and one coat of color are on the hull. The outwales are fully shaped, sanded, and first coated with wiping varnish off the boat, brass stems bent and ready to install. Tinted primer going on: Primer sanded between coats; the light spots are high points...
