Stay safe in this big storm ...

Well a large part of the country is in a winter storm. Heavy rains and floods in Florida to freezing rain to heavy snow fall up north. We are expecting about 8 more inches to add to the 4-5 that has dumped on us already. The winds are making a mess of things, but it is nice to have a little...

    Fry Pan vs Porridge Pot

Well, as I often mention, I paddle solo … so my cooking only has to satisfy me. I do not carry oil nor breading but eat walleye often on a trip. I boil my fish. I do season it, but it is boiled not fried. Easy to clean, ( the pan ) no lingering odors enticing larger critters, but mostly I...

    Happy New Year Everyone

I wanted to wish everyone on this board a happy and safe new year. My wife and I were going to go out for dinner ... but my son needed me to watch his dog . I posted about that in another thread. Well, now my daughter needed me to watch her dog today and tomorrow. So ... nothing like taking...

One canoe to rule them all?

I did the following write up comparing Nova Craft Pal and the Polaris. Side note, if a Prospector was not available as a do all one boat special, either of these two would fit the bill … but the Prospector really is a do all if you just could only have one. “Art, I have tripped in both boats...

Mr. Poling, I have a Polaris and have tripped in it ( rigged solo ). If you would like any info about paddling, tripping, whatever in a Polaris feel free to pm me. Bob.

Winter camp is ready to go.

Thanks Robin. We hiked the river bottom today, just under 4 miles. It was beautiful as it got cold again last night ( low 20s ) and the hoar frost was heavy. The dogs loved it … but poor old Jake is limping a bit. We walked a little too far for his hip today. A good nap and dog treat by the...

Winter camp is ready to go.

Snapper, I feel you. We have had rain and warm temps … this snow was unexpected as it was supposed to be rain. Our trek today was awesome … but the sun and then 40 degree temps are eliminating the snow … leaving us with a lot of muddy brown and grey … yuk. hoping for some snow Sunday … 🤞🙏🏼

Winter camp is ready to go.

Well, I picked up my Granddog last night as my son and his girlfriend were traveling to her parents for Christmas/New Years. So naturally we went for a timber romp this morning. Jake is a veteran. But Jordy ( green jacket ) is learning all about the snowy woods and winter camp. l It was a...

One canoe to rule them all?

I am an advocate for the prospector. I have a 15 foot Chestnut Prospector and it has been ( by far ) the best canoe I have ever owned. I paddle day and Wilderness trips. Empty and loaded, in current or flat water, wind, … this has been the best canoe I have ever owned. That said, I can no...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

All my canoes are tandem rigged to be paddled solo … with my dog in front of me. However, my wife paddles an older Flashfire. She uses a Greenland double blade. The canoe has foot pegs and a back rest. In this way she can paddle in the Wisconsin River with me both up and down current. It is...

How is your winter so far?

We were cold, river was solid but thin. Wide open now, 50 degrees and raining…ugh. Have to heat with LP as it is too warm for the wood stove. Ground is soft, wet slippery mud. Hiking kinda sucks . Waiting for a solid freeze … looks like it’s gonna be a while …

    Pillows

I use a canvas sack that I tump. When camp is set up, it is mostly empty, sans a few clothes. This is what I use as a pillow. It is not great but it is good enough. I am usually so tired when on a trip I could likely sleep on a bed of nails anyway.

Winter time, boredom and the used canoe market

sonofsquink, I paddle both up and down river ( Wisconsin River ) with my dog. For reference, I am 6'2" and about 215 - my dog is 70 pounds. I have done a December trip from the Mazo area to the HWY 23 bridge - days of easy paddling - hot tenting over night. In fact, I paddle everywhere with...

Hot Tent Camping In A Blizzard | ASMR

I found the stove interesting. It looked to be fairly efficient for a pack stove. For me personally, winter camping and piece of kit that requires nuts and bolts for assembly/disassembly is a no no ( again speaking for myself ). My snow trekker tent and kniko stove are too large to back pack...
