Charity paddles- what length do you think?

I'd buy that. Can I bid? How much does it flex?

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

I think I've got it now, PT. You would like epoxy. You would accept a foam floor with foam ribs extending up the the sides. But you don't want just foam ribs on the floor/sides, which is the the way Souris River constructs a hull to give it more flexibility. That makes structural sense to me...

Craigslist Cape Cod - 1922 Old Town HW

Lot of interesting and conflicting history about the meaning of the Old Town "HW" and "CS" terminology addressed by Benson.

    Kenco Outfitters

I've been there many times. I worked in Kingston and lived in Woodstock for many years and passed by the location, even before Kenco occupied it, on my daily commute. In fact, Kenco was located in Woodstock before they expanded into the current location—I forget when.

    "Ecopoxy" Resin

I suppose builders who are interested in getting info about the exact formulation and product used for composite lamination could contact Hellman Canoe and ask them.

Sharing your location dot with spouse

I had no idea what a location dot is, much less how to share one, so I had to look it all up. For android phones, the Google Maps app is evidently used. Well, I've never used Google Maps on a phone either. I rarely use my smart phone for anything, actually, so it probably wasn't too smart of me...

    New Ash Gunwales

Watco "Teak" oil is the exterior and marine oil. Watco "Danish" is the interior oil. Watco Teak comes in a variety of stain colors, and Dave Curtis used walnut stain Watco Teak oil on the ash woodwork of his Hemlock canoes, as far as I recall. @Conk would know for sure if he sees this thread.

    "Ecopoxy" Resin

Ah, thanks, I realize that I misspoke in my OP above. It's the new UV Shield, not the new Epoxy Finish, that is supposed to save weight and be more flexible and durable than standard gel coat. The UV Shield, the composition of which is unstated, saves weight because it can be sprayed on about...

Lofting Canoe Molds from CanoeCraft tables

Amen. That will require increased participation and generosity from members in all future fund drives, plus someone with vigor and available time to become administrator when I quit after the next fund drive in November 2026. Now, back to the technicalities of lofting canoe molds.

    "Ecopoxy" Resin

In another active thread, I found out that Helman Canoe has been using something called Ecopoxy resin in its canoes since 2010. I thought maybe that's just Hellman's marketing name for some mixture they use but, no, it's the name of an actual product. https://www.ecopoxy.com/ According to this...

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

Hellman uses something they call "Ecopoxy" resin, which is plant-based and is supposedly stronger than polymer-based regular epoxy resin. Is this just marketing . . . real or Memorex . . . who knows? https://hellmancanoes.com/canoe-contructions/

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

What canoe has a full foam core, no foam ribs, and is made entirely of pure epoxy resin? I'm not familiar with all the current canoes and am genuinely curious.

    Larger Canoe: Tumblehome or Not

PaddleTime, as one who has paddled for 72 years, owned 21 different canoes and kayaks, and who has paddled lots of other canoes, let me try to simplify things for you: Get a Souris River Quetico 18.5. Why? Because if you are committed to the durability of epoxy construction for whatever...

    Ankle support for kneeling

Yes, you can stretch and increase the flexion of your ankles if you practice by sitting on the floor with your butt on your calves and the top of your feet flexed flat on the floor. While you watch TV, for example. You will be able to do this for longer and longer periods of time if you practice...

Bio of John Berry, his risqué humor, and "The Hooker"

Yes, I recounted that story in my OP. John first proposed to Jim Henry that the rights to the "Mad River Canoe" name be determined by an axe throwing contest, a sport in which he was very skilled. Jim smartly refused and the decision was made by a coin flip.

The world’s first female whitewater open canoe designer

Yes, a good question. I imagine she doesn't do much back ferrying or any sort of back paddling. The linked Esquif page on the Extasy says: "The design features the latest insights into state-of-the art fluid dynamics, based on the leading scientific study on whitewater boat geometry...

The world’s first female whitewater open canoe designer

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

". . . Bill Mason’s legacy is no doubt boosting the sales of Prospector canoes to this day. But for the most part, these old-schoolers’ books, films and in-person lectures were the product. The audience paid for them directly, and their value was intrinsic, not measured by how well they could...

Stewart Coffin, maker of Iliad paddles, canoes & the first whitewater kayaks in the U.S., and wilderness author

An Iliad paddle was used by Nolan Whitesell in the only open canoe run of the Niagara Gorge, ever, in 1987. His spare paddle affixed over his rear bag is an Iliad with yellow shaft and gray grip. The paddle he paddled with also could have been an Iliad, although it also could have been a Norse...
