    The Perch are Biting

My father and I used to go to Lake Erie. We would put the boat in the water and go out to Put-In-Bay at South Bass Island and spend the night anchored in the bay. The next morning after breakfast, we would go to Middle Bass Island and go Perch fishing. We would fish all day and then go back...

    Bear testing

I have also been around bears a lot and I have also never used a bear container, nor have I ever hung my food. I have never lost any food to a bear. I have had tents shredded and contents scattered, but I always stored my food away from camp by about 100 feet.

Sleeping in tent vs. car vs. pickup bed in 10° F

The coldest that I camped was -50F at Fort Greely, Alaska. I was in an unheated tent in an army sleeping bag on top of a single row of duffle bags. The next night, a chinook wind came through warming it up to +40F. We had to strip down to our t shirts and got a sun tan in late November in Alaska.

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

I stopped using deet about 5 years ago. I treat my clothes with Permethrin and I use Picaridin lotion on exposed skin. I buy the Permethrin and Picaridin from Sportsmans Warehouse under the Sawyer brand. If I need more protection, I bring out the headnet. Permethrin and Picaridin does not...

Trip report on Noatak/Colville Rivers in Gates of the Arctic NP and National Petroleum Reserve?

I have lived in Alaska for 42 years. A 20 mph wind is normal up here. I have camped with 40 mph winds gusting to 60 mph frequently. I have always used Eureka tents and they seem to hold together in the wind.

If there isn't a canoe trip...

I don’t know anything about sailing. I would probably capsize the boat.

    Trouble bear

If that happened in Alaska, we would be told to grab our guns in case the bear approached us. I have been told twice in the 42 years I have lived here to grab my gun because of a bear in the campground.

    East coast beaver attacks.

I used to go spelunking in West Virginia in the 1970s. In some of those caves, we would be just inches from bats as we would pass along some of the ridges inside the caves.

Best canoe dog for wolf protection

The two moose attacks I had was a female moose. I kept a tree between us both times.

Best canoe dog for wolf protection

I fear a moose attack more than a bear attack. I have been charged twice by moose. I have shared trails with a brown bear before. Wolves generally keep their distance, although a few years ago, a wolf kept a woman in an outhouse for 6-8 hours.

This same question was asked a few years before and the concensus was for a solar charger, the Big Blue 28 watt Solar Charger was the favorite. It was given such good remarks, that I bought one to use on my wilderness canoe trips. It is very welI made. I haven’t used it yet other than testing...

Following wind, waves, and canoe design. Where to next?

You might consider getting a splash cover. I bought one from Red Leaf Designs. The splash covers helps miitgate the wind and with any waves that may splash over.
