    'new' Bell Morningstar

@tketcham thank you, very helpful! What epoxy would you recommend for the gel coat? Same for the inside? (I'll have to take a closer look to see if it really needs it inside.) What type of layup is your Morningstar, and how has it help up in swiftwater streams? If I understand correctly...

Obvious safety violation: Say something or keep quiet?

This would be my temptation, because I don't like confrontation, especially with strangers. But, I've tried things along these lines a time or two, and have had it backfire. Options include anti-law enforcement/rebellious sentiment, or at best a temporary acceptance of a recommendation for the...

    'new' Bell Morningstar

Was the Northwoods similar to the Morningstar? I don't think I know that model.

Mesmerizing/Interesting Phenomena & Experiences Without An Eclipse

I've heard iron ore deposits can do this.

    'new' Bell Morningstar

Well, prompted by some discussion here and elsewhere, in which it seems that the Morningstar has a small but devoted following as a soloizable tandem that might be a good combi boat for poling and paddling, I picked one up late last fall, a 2002 white gold. I had to tetris all the boats into...

    Plus size canoeing?

Welcome, miss katie! My wife is also shapely, and one thing I've learned is that a lot of outdoor gear is often shaped for men. Canoes and kayaks which can easily carry my wife's weight don't necessarily fit her hips comfortably, because they're designed by men for man hips. So, I'd echo...

    Mounting seats

Old Town had great customer service as of ~2019. I emailed them about an Old Town canoe from the 80s and they came back with info and specs to help me replace rotten wood work. I'd start with asking them.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

To be honest I haven't really tried yet. I'm overdue for some self-rescue drills - I suspect attempts to pole the Phoenix would provide a good opportunity. As soon as the water warms up a bit.....

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

Sounds perfect! I'm on the short side of average so no issue there, and I've encountered my share of wet/lumpy camp sites in the Daks. Nice that it can be a free-standing tent too. The only problem these days is that the dog often comes and I like a tent to separate him and the varmints at...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I have a Phoenix which I love for twisty swamps and small flatwater, but I wish I had something I could stand in and pole that would have similarly versatile tracking/turning capabilities. I've thought about getting a Prospector but not sure it would fit the bill.

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

@Patrick Corry that Opeongo hammock looks great. I've had a Hennessey hammock for years but never cottoned to it. Because I move around in my sleep a lot the thing was in constant motion no matter how tight I rigged it. Seasickness while trying to sleep isn't fun. Seems like the Opeongo...

@Black_Fly how does the NC Prospector compare to the Phoenix? What's the layup on the NC?

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

I have two Sanborns, which I compared to an old Mitchell and a BB Catalyst, my other paddles with glassed blades. The BB is completely smooth, but the Mitchell and Sanborns are similar, with the weave of the cloth both visible and apparent to the touch. I wonder if thicker glass fabric is used...

    Photo of the day

At it again..... Gotta paddle daily to get a photo of the day, right?? Got out for a quick round before work this morning.

    Multi pocket canoe packs

For those looking for the two-halves style, there's a new one I just came across. I don't know anything about it other than what I read in the description, so no endorsement here. Maybe the pics will help you DIY seamsters (I'm jealous of your skills!)...
