So, what old item do you still use?

I've got a few. Directly behind me top to bottom. Mad River Independence, Dagger Sojourn, Woodstrip Chestnut Prospector copy, woodstrip William English Model 20 copy. In the back woodstrip Yonah, a large canoe for big paddlers on big water design by my friend Steve, Northstar Northwind 18...

So, what old item do you still use?

This stout ash paddle has been with me since 1967. I picked it out to use on my first longish trip(6 days) through Region Seven Scout canoe base. At the end of the trip we had a chance to buy the paddle we used on the trip for $10. It was all of my spending money for the trip, but a good...

In honor of National Serpent Day

I have been trying to figure this out. Hognosed snake is not right and the head is not upside down. The plates on the top of the head are like armor. This snake lives mostly under ground and uses its head to push through soil, sometimes quite gravelly. My next guess will be pine snake...

In honor of National Serpent Day

Hognosed snake, maybe. Seems that the head is upside down and we are looking at the lower jaw.

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

I was 24, 1976. Chestnut Pal. Actually 3 people cooperatively made the purchase and shared the canoe. We went to the shop to purchse a Mad River Explorer and found the Chestnut and were smitten. I ended up buying out the other shares over the next few years. It was a great boat to paddle...

    Mad River Model?

Mad River had a composite 17' 6" Expedition with shoulders that came out about 2010. The canoe in the Facebook ad looks to be that long

BWCAW: Best campground for basecamp paddling?

Lets clarify your objective. No portaging at all with outfit or on day trips? By basecamp do you mean a campsite in the wilderness area that you will paddle to or a campground outside the wilderness area from which you could drive to different entry points for day trips? Not portaging at all...

    Stinky Canoe Pack

I have a 25yo Duluth day pack that I used constantly for work. The back would get real salty from sweat. I would do the rinse and spin pretty regularly to keep the salt from degrading the cotton canvas. It is well worth the effort. I wouldn't be able to afford a replacement these days!

    Stinky Canoe Pack

In a utility sink or tub I completely soak in warm water with Thymox added. Thymox is a really decent botanical anti-bacterial. Scrub any stained area with a brush. Put in washer and spin the water out. Rinse several times until rinse water is clear spinning each time. You can do all the...

    Photo of the day

We have a place in NEGA that we harvest pawpaws by canoe! Paddling up a long abandon ditch that drained a river bottomland for agriculture on the Tugaloo River we come under a bunch of pawpaw trees arching over the water. You can reach out with your paddle and shake a tree a bit. If there are...

    Over Maximum Load

If you are maxed out you might have the wrong boat for the task. Tell us more about the planned trip. What canoe are you using for this trip? Can you move the seat to adjust the trim? You are the heaviest item in the boat so moving the seat just a few inches can make a big difference. Would...

    1972 Old Town Chipewyan 18'

It is very likely royalex as it has no added flotation. Old Town called it Oltonar, but it was the same Uniroyal product as royalex.
