I can tell you what kind of training doesn’t go with paddling...powerlifting! Which is how I train...big quads go numb while kneeling, crossdraws become a mobility issue, and carrying around 270lbs on a 5’8” frame on portages basically sucks. But I enjoy both.

My go to ground dwelling pad is the Nemo Tensor Alpine. I also usually bring a hammock with me, lately it’s been a customized Dream Hammock. I detest Exped pads. I think they absolutely suck. I’ve owned three top end models from them and they have all failed miserably. Sam

The good old Madawaska River in Ontario when I was 8 years old. I try to paddle it at least once a year.

0% and I’m good with that! My wife has two conditions. First I bring my Garmin InReach. Second, I take our one pup Pippa who she claims is a handful when I’m away. I love tripping with my dogs so it works for me!!

Lower Madawaska warm up end of April. Nettogami River repeat end of May. And I’ve got some time off end of August, no plan yet. A few shorter canoe trips here and there throughout the paddling season.

This is very subjective...ie running a class 3-4 with a loaded canoe while boat scouting on a remote river or running a class 4-5 at a local park and play spot. I would say the first would be a more skilled paddler. Ie you can be an advanced paddler and not run class 4.

I’m holding on tightly to my Mad River Caption. Such a shame they are no longer being made.
