The Joy of (Self-Imposed) Canoe Trip Suffering

As I read these posts I started to wonder if "suffering" is a state of mind. i.e. one person's suffering might be another's discomfort, and yet another's inconvenience. Not trying to minimise someone's suffering. Just saying it may be relative to past experiences. Also, the length of the "trial"...

Mesmerizing/Interesting Phenomena & Experiences Without An Eclipse

A memory that sticks in my mind is from an early October solo trip in the BWCA. I got up in the middle of the night to relieve my bladder, and while up I walked down to the lake. The lake was still like glass and all the stars were perfectly reflected in it. Looking out across the lake it was...

Supermarket Food Ideas for Extended Tripping

My menu probably wouldn't work for most. When tripping I look at food as fuel and I keep it very simple. I don't enjoy cooking or the clean up afterwards, so for supper I cook a one pot meal and eat it out of the pot. Knorr sides with dehydrated ground beef or chicken. Breakfast is coffee and...

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

Nothing fancy here. Depending on the weather I set up this hex fly. I have a diamond fly for mild weather that takes two less guy ropes. For a few years I carried along a 10 x 12 silnylon tarp that never has been out of the bag.

    Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Canoe Hulls

Glenn, I mostly sit. I'll kneel when fighting a head wind or trying to pick up the pace.

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

I have had both a Camper and Penobscot 17' to haul the family around in. The camper felt much more stable of the two due to it's flat bottom. It would be great to test ride them for your self. That said, I would definitely recommend the Camper for a first family canoe. Dave

How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

2 solo, 3 tandem. Haven't needed the spare yet. Been carrying a multi tool in my day pack for 13 years and haven't used it yet. By now if I needed it I probably wouldn't remember that I had it. Dave

Machinist 25 years, electric motor technician 25 years. Now retired. My FB profile lists my education as having graduated from the School Of Hard Knocks. Lately I have realised that I haven't graduated yet. Dave

    Weather eye

I have to agree with Goonstroke on watching wind direction. winds out of the east usually spell trouble for me. NW is normal where I'm at.

    Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Canoe Hulls

Glenn, you make some very good points in post #7. I can't argue with science and would agree with you 100%. I like to look at the math when analysing situations. However, I could be the best bad example on this site. When it comes to paddling I do it all wrong. My solo is a symmetrical tandem...
