    Retired Paddlers Network

After Christmas this year I will join the ranks of liberated paddlers and I too welcome wandering paddlers at our home. We live in NE Pennsylvania on a 460 acre glacial lake and are a ten minute trip to the Delaware river.

You meet the nicest people on this forum!

Thanks for the kind words Snapper. Spending time with you and Marie was a delight. I hope you love the boat and I look forward to crossing paddles with you in the future.

Exactly how long is a "long" portage?

A long portage is one..... A long portage is one..... When during the hike everything begins to ache and the thoughts wander to wondering if the trail will ever end.

Exactly how long is a "long" portage?

A long portage for me is one where part way through the hike I wonder if it is ever going to end.

Any favorite writings on the experience of canoeing?

Lorax, your magnificent prose gave me chills. Absolutely beautiful awareness and expression. Please let us know when your book is published.

Who have you meet that made a memory.......

I've made my living as an potter for the past 40+ years and when traveling to shows around the country I would try to build in a solo paddling trip when possible. After a show not far from the BWCW I had the good fortune of spending a week on the back country lakes. On the last night of the...

    Random thoughts and cabin fever.

Reading this thoughtful... Reading this thoughtful... heartfelt and aware posting and thread, I'm honored to be on this forum. Rippy, your thoughts on the slowly eroding pedestal ring true from this end as well. Aren't we blessed souls to have sons who still enjoy the wilderness experience...

    Personal canoe evolution

Hi Yellow. I met Dave Curtis and the Kestrel amidst a snow storm and eight degree temps yesterday. So while the conditions for a first paddle were nearly perfect, the river was uncooperative in its hardness. Hopefully by March we'll have it in the water. I had the chance to play with this demo...

    Personal canoe evolution

Dad got me started paddling in "Indian guides" about 55 years ago and the fascination of paddling is still a dominant theme in this life. In the eighties I begin messing around with some solo canoes that were in inventory at my paddlesport shop, a Dagger Sojourn and Merrimack Baboosic come to...

    foot brace use

Hi YC. I installed footpegs as per the photos and thru bolted them to my old royalex Mohawk (used primarily for whitewater and other bumpy situations) more than ten years ago. They remain rock solid with no discernible damage to the Royalex in any way.

    What advice would you give?

Prior to each outing, I'd remind myself to expect nothing.

Hi Pete, I truly enjoyed your trip report. Fabulous photos and refreshing honesty about the workings of the solo tripping mind. Thanks

    New Pennsylvania Guy

It is a joy to be plugged into this community of experienced and enthusiastic paddlers. Ever since that day 55 years ago when my Dad laughed uncontrollably as I made circles attempting to solo a canoe at an "Indian Guides" (you old guys remember them?) event, I've been infatuated by paddle...

Hornbeck New Trick Black Jack 12

I've been on three multi day tips with the New Trick 12 footer in the blackjack layup. Other than having the limited hull speed of a 12 ft. craft I find it a delight. The single blade is my paddle of choice and with the seat padded up 3.5 to 4 inches above the original height is quite comfy to...
