Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

Thankfully I haven’t had anything scary yet on a portage, the oddest I have seen (and qualifies for funny as well) has been those big, round plastic Culligan like water jugs and air travel type suitcases. Seen on different trips, both BWCA.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I only have two solos (for now) -My first one is a Wenonah Prism, this is my daily driver and tripping boat -My second is a Blackhawk Shadow 15’8”, I rarely pull this one out now, I should really sell it but can’t get myself to, it’s a beautiful boat with gorgeous wood, a nice “modern...

    Sad to Hear

Too many sad endings with Mad River over the years.

    Mad River Freedom on CL

Judging by your location, I’m assuming it’s the blue one in Winters? It’s definitely a composite boat, it has molded float tanks in the ends which aren’t found on Royalex boats (that I’ve ever seen). It certainly could be Kevlar, but they also made it out of fiberglass. The best way to know...

    A New Charity Idea

I’m not sure if they’re after any gear, but you could reach out to Urban Boatbuilders in St. Paul, MN. I know they run a BWCA trip with their apprentices and may like some gear for that, they probably won’t be as standardized as BSA. While I haven’t really dug into them much, their...

    New Spot

Earlier in the week I needed to get some new scenery, a slightly out of the way spot recommended by a coworker got the green light. This is a three lake chain laid out in a north-south direction, with the access on the northern most lake. To access the middle section you have to sneak under a...

    Belated Hello

Hey guys, sorry for the belated introduction, I completely spaced last week when I should have put more effort into being more polite. Anyway, long time lurker from Northern WI, paddle shop employee and solo paddler, usually out searching for wildlife to take pictures of. Happy to finally be...

    Another nice day paddle

Wow, you guys are way ahead of us. It always amazes me how little distance south one can go yet see such a change in budding/leafing of trees and nesting/hatching times. Even last week we still had some migratory birds passing through and a lot of nesting birds in the area were just getting...

Black_Fly, Yakima has an adapter to attach their Skyline tower to your rails allowing for aftermarket crossbar lengths. I believe you remove the factory ones, but they may just stay stowed along the side rail, it’s been a while since I did one. Thule may (probably) have the same thing, but I’ve...

    Pleasant Day Paddle

Thanks everyone! I’m lucky to be able to paddle for now so I’m trying to take advantage of it (along with some hiking and biking) and I’m happy to share as long as people are willing to put up with me!

    Registration

Black_Fly, the advantage to registering those 3 canoes would be the ability to use them in any State (I believe, I really only pay attention to the Midwest) without having to think about/remember which state has which rules. Of course you could always dedicate those boats as your WI and MI boats...

    Sun is Out

Thanks Bob! It was a fantastic time. Lots of waterfowl, though none were happy to see me. It’s a spot I only paddle early and late season, too many tourists and motorboat traffic, albeit slow as it’s a looooooong no wake section.

    Magic Dog

I would agree with all of that. While I rarely fish, I do have my camera with me at all times and felt the Magic was plenty stable for trying to shoot moving creatures, though I was kneeling and that always feels better to me when shifting my weight around.
