    Mad River cold crack repair

My son has a Mad River ME which developed serious cold cracks - some clear down into the bilge. It was one day away from being thrown in a dumpster by my son in law, who had stored it outside over the winter for several years. We repaired it with Gflex and tape and it survived. The photos are...

    Outfitting, Maintenance and Repair Preparations

You don’t have to take the gunwales all the way off, especially since the cold crack is near one of the ends. I have just loosened the section around the crack when repairing several Royalex Mad River canoes with cold cracks. Being in AZ you shouldn’t have an issue with the gunwales rotting...

2/19-21/24 Big Pond Catskills NY (+ hearing aid discussion)

More info on hearing aids. I have had mine for nearly a year and like them. I have Phonak brand and got them through an audiologist for about 2k. The cost will vary depending on the type and severity of hearing loss. I really like the bluetooth connection to my IPhone. I can listen to...

Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

I am always carrying drinking water when running silty desert rivers, I.e. the Green, Colorado, Yampa, etc. anyway, so I now freeze Plastic 1.5 liter orange juice bottles and carry them in softside coolers and/or my Yeti 50 hardside cooler. I transfer the water to my hydroflask as it melts and...

Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

We made an unusual and kind of scary find on a multi day trip down the Green River south of Pinedale, Wyoming. It wasn’t on a portage trail, but in the river. Our group of about six canoes- mostly 8-15 year old kids had just passed under the LaBarge road bridge when someone shouted that they...

    Wyoming suggestions for river trip

We did a 3-4 day trip on the Green River in Wyoming about 25 years ago. I just looked at the route on Google Earth and it doesn’t look like it has changed much. We put in on the New Fork River south of Pinedale and took out at the top of the Fontenelle Reservoir. We saw no other boaters but a...

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

The center photo clearly shows the cracks from side to side on the exposed cross section. You can look for similar cracks along the full length of the boat. What is shown should be an easy fix with only a couple of screws to remove on each side.

How do you know the water temperature?

I have a Kestrel 2000 - a cheaper version of Nomad’s 2500, and use it for wind speed and occasionally temperature. I like correlating weather forecasts with observed conditions to get a feel for the probable accuracy of future weather forecasts and how wind from various directions affects wave...

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

Sorry Mr Poling, but having repaired cold cracks in multiple canoes, I can assure you that it would be much faster (and cheaper) to fix those little cracks than to drive from western PA to Virginia Beach!!

Royalex MR Explorer Cold Cracks - Advice & Repair

I have two Royalex Explorers, both from the early 1980’s. I am the original owner of one and it has seen Class 1-2+ paddled tandem in addition to shallow rivers, lakes and creeks. It is very versatile and probably the most used canoe in our fleet over the past 35 years. It developed a couple...

Questions about sassafras for a paddle

Thanks to the tip from lowangle Al re the Badger sassafras tripper available at the Adirondack shop, I now have one. However shipping from ADK’s was over $100 and the owner suggested trying a closer shop. Rutabaga also had a 57” Tripper and a special offering free shipping. It arrived last...

    Composite canoe storage questions

I don’t see what the difference would be between suspending a boat, as in the photo, and storing it on a rack or sawhorses. It is supported in two places in each setup. I have hung composite and royalex canoes like that for over 30 years with no ill effects. I have also stored an old Kevlar...

What Do You Do In Winter ?

Hi Bob- Here are a few photos- the one in the canoe was from a few years ago when she was a pup. The one in the snow is her on top of 5-6 feet of snow just outside of our kitchen window Last March. The red leaf ones are from last month. She does love to run, especially when it is cold out. It...

What Do You Do In Winter ?

I take my dog (40 pound Vizsla) for a run at the 40 acre off leash dog park most days. I snowshoed with her from November until April last year due to the record snowfall. This year, now that my rotator cuff is healed, I also plan on doing a lot of XC skiing, and some Alpine skiing at the...

    2023 Fund Drive Now On

I hadn’t used PayPal since the last Canoetripping.net fundraiser yet it somehow had my new credit card number for a replacement card that I just got about 2 months ago. Are they “in bed” somehow with all the credit companies? It looks like a number of other members here share my lack of...
