Best way to remove paint from outwales?

I agree with Christy. I recently painted some gunwales only to have it start chipping off. My solution was to make new ones but that is a whole different story. If you have a heated area to work in I think it should take a week or two. dougd

    Favorite piece of discontinued gear?

Peak 1 Stove! This summer I found mine, bought in the 80's as gift to me by a good friend. I used it for years and then switched over to propane. I pulled it out of storage and it had a full tank and all I could think was that is was screwed, been sitting for two plus years. I primed it, put...

What have you forgotten on a trip?

Tent poles! Slept under the stars that night and woke up more than a bit soggy from the morning dew. Hal once forgot his entire food bag. Good thing we had plenty between the rest of us! Bailer which doubles as...well a urinal while in the middle of the lake. Unfortunate for me it was a...

    Oil for wood gunwales?

I'm going to experiment with mineral spirits and tung oil on a piece of left over wood from the Rob Roy rebuild. I'm using those two ingredients because I have them on hand and don't want to varnish the new gunwales. In the past I've only used straight tung oil. What ratio would be good for...

    Photo of the day

Thanks Mark, wish I could say it was mine. We had a lot of good photo's from that day much the same as posted. I lost all of mine in a house fire a few years ago. It was one heck of a day on a river that few run.

    Photo of the day

No Title This is posted else where but wanted to post it here as well. This picture was taken by my good friend Scott Bolser. I think it was around 2007 on the Pine River in Ossippie, NH. It was Jan 1 and it was 70 degrees out. We had a fog riding over our heads from the minute we got on...

    Happy Thanksgiving

Drove by a flock of turkeys this morning, maybe 15 or so. I see them all the time around here. Not being a fan of turkey we had lobster and haddock for Thanksgiving! Hope you had a great day! dougd

    Refurbishing A Thwart

More of the Rob Roy rebuild is going on. I decided to use the original thwart and needed to do some rehab to it. Next is figuring out a deck and then some skid plates, Dynel only and then maybe a new paint job. If you care to read the write up scroll down to 11/23/16. It's coming along...

    Blown away

Years ago on the Merrimack River Hal and I setup my 4 man Timberline tent. Had pretty steady winds all day. Since was getting dark I thought I'd be smart and put a candle lantern (remember those?) in it, had a line strung for it. Well, we're sitting there around the fire and a huge gust of...

    Steam Bending with Bag

Alan is darning the same as sewing? I got some socks....! More work done on the gunwales for the Rob Roy. Clamp free, screwed and bolted into the cowling but more work to be done. The project that keeps haunting ya! Here's the write up, scroll down to 11/19...

    Steam Bending with Bag

OK, McCrea, the snake picture is just a tad too much for this herpetophobiaist! If you want to get hit with a shovel in the head ask my old high school buddy about that after chasing me with a snake, true story! Yesterday saw the last gunwale for the Rob Roy steamed, bent and clamped into...

    Steam Bending with Bag

Today I cut and moved the in wale into place. It fought with a little which surprised me a little. Going to steam the last gunwale this weekend and get it into place. Still a lot of steps until completion but am finally enjoying working on this demon hull...

    Steam Bending with Bag

More on the steaming project and more of the Red Green setup. I don't how you others make it look so organized, nothing seems to work that well for me but heck I got it done. Write up is the same: http://scooter-bangortoportland.blogspot.com/2016/06/the-satan-project.html Scroll down to 11/8...
