help me pick a flatwater tandem

Yes, I'm 140, wife is 100, and my dog is about 90 lbs = 330lbs. If my wife doesn't come, my dog always does. So "solo" is me plus the big dog. The dog and I might be able to fit a larger pack canoe if it was well over 13', but the little packs 13' and under would be cramped and unstable when my...

help me pick a flatwater tandem

I've got an RFQ into KAS. We'll see how much they need to get a canoe to me. Ohio is something like 2200 miles from me. Algonquin is closer to 3000 miles. I hate to spend all my money for the boat just on moving it.

help me pick a flatwater tandem

I have a roof rack, but I prefer to use my trailer. I'm not taking either one traveling though. I'm pretty sure the canoe will be over the carry-on size for Delta. I've written Steve to see about that one though.

help me pick a flatwater tandem

I introduced myself in the Introductions section, and mentioned I'm looking for a new canoe to replace my Old Town Guide 147. I've been keeping my eye on local, and nearby States' Craigslist and came up with a few leads, the best of which so far is a used Wenonah Solo Plus in Tuffweave in the...

Ford confirms Ranger, Bronco, will return 2019

The State department doesn't spend on genuine Toyota Hi Lux's for rebels anymore, because there are cheaper Chinese copies.

    Cold Water Safety

Here in Lake Tahoe, the water stays cold all year. Even in the summer it's cold enough that people that are suddenly immersed can have shock and drown if they're not wearing PFD's. During the boating season, there's stories in the news several times a month with people that succumb to the...

    Canoes not tippy?

That's the same canoe. They make it look awful. I can stand on the gunnels and rock mine without it tipping. I paddle it stand-up on the bottom through foot-high waves. It's my first canoe, and I'm a complete novice, but it took a lot more than that to capsize it.

I think a lot of lakes will be restored this year. I lived in San Jose also, by the way, through the 90's. I didn't do any paddling at that time though. At one point, I lived right on Lexington reservoir in a rented house. It would have been great for paddling, but at the time I was spending...

There's a few lakes up there by the Tioga pass. I think Tioga Lake is the highest. Ellery and Tenaya lakes are a little lower on either side of the pass, but at 100 acres, only Tenaya is bigger than a large pond. Those kind of lakes is what I paddle mostly. I've got more than a dozen high...

    Canoes not tippy?

This. If I'm soloing, I find my Old Town Guide has very high secondary stability. I have to really try hard to flip it. I can lean it far enough over to take water on over the gunnels, and it will still roll back upright. But when my wife is in the bow seat, it's not as stable. We capsized...

Unfortunately, I doubt local outfitters will even stock canoes much less have tryouts. Here, SUP is the rage for paddlesports. It's all paddleboards and kayaks. I can get some canoes through REI if I go to a city like Reno or Sacramento, but there's no tryouts in the city. At Lake Tahoe, the...

    from Eastern Sierra

I live in the Great Basin on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada. I bought my kids kayaks and my wife and I a canoe a couple years ago and have enjoyed paddling immensely. I'm considering upgrading the canoe and thought I should seek some advice in doing so, so I joined. I bought the kids...
