Inside varnish is done. My first boat I used Epifanes. This time around I went with Total Boat Gleam. Epifanes is great, but with the size of this boat, looking to save a few bucks. Nice thing with the Gleam is you can hot coat it. They say you can do three coats a day, so that’s what I did.

Got one of the inner gunnels glued on tonight. Was going to do both inners, but not enough clamps.

Building the gunwales. Have some nice tight grained Douglas Fir, problem is the boards are only 6’8” long. Anybody ever try multiple scarf joints on a set of gunwales? Thought I’d give it a shot. Got two scarfs per gunwale glued up tonight. I’ll glue up the third set of scarfs tomorrow...

I’ve developed a bit of an allergy to cedar dust, so I decided to splurge and pick up a Festool sander and dust extractor. Totally blown away with how well it works. Don’t need to wear a respirator anymore, I won’t go so far to say sanding is a joy, but it sure is a lot better than sanding with...

I used a short piece of a strip, put it behind the hull, pushed it up to the bottom of the form, made a pencil mark on the little strip. Then pull the little strip out, line up the pencil mark on the outer hull, and make a new pencil mark at the top. It’s basically transferring the position of...

Interested in kayaking portions of the routes of Lewis and Clarke

I’ve also done the Missouri, 110 miles worth. Put in at Coal Banks, and took out at James Kipp. The trip took 5 days. We did it in May. Saw very few people, was a nice trip. I’ve taken two trips on the lower Yellowstone, both times put in at Intake, and taken out at the confluence of the...

    Humorous outdoor situations or events

This is pretty embarrassing. On my first trip to the BWCA I was solo. Paddled out to a nice site on the Kawishiwi River, and set up camp. Had a nice steak dinner, and retired to my chair to watch the northern lights. I had the foresight to pack in two stainless growlers of beer from the...
