Dogs. Especially canoe dogs

I can't start my jeep or load a canoe without this dog going ballistic. He is a great swimmer, but he won't jump in. He has to wade in, lol. His formal name is Baxter, but he goes by Fat Head

B0C04FE9-B60E-484F-B5C3-7EB595F3D978.jpeg Our 2nd heeler, Kiah, full sister to Bogan, likes water but not swimming. She doesn't eagerly jump into the canoe like brother. It may due to being from a Fall litter, no real opportunity to experience canoeing when small.

My dog Jake has been in many of my canoe trip posts. He is my best friend and we go everywhere together. He has been snorkeling with me in the Bahamas, he comes to work with me ( I teach behavior problem high school students ), we are a nationally certified therapy team as such we volunteer at nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospitals. Also, we travel by canoe to the back country. People who do not own dogs, do not get how deeply they enter one's heart and when we lose them, how desperately painful it can be to have not have that special friend to share life with anymore.

I love reading about canoe - outdoor - dog stories. I am glad I get to add a pic or two to this posting.

Jake and I love spending time together. He is my best friend.

He is one last one at work with me ... looks like he had a hard day ...

Sorry for your loss.
My Border Collie Ruby Begonia is my best paddling partner. She was on her first week long canoe trip at the age of 6 months on the Willamette River in Oregon.

Years ago I was paddling a small mountain lake early in the morning in the Sierras. I was kneeling in an old Sawyer Cruiser with another Border Collie and a heeler/Aussie cow dog. They were both lying in the bottom of the boat. It was still and beautiful. I paddled past a quiet camp. A guy came over to the lake shore with his coffee cup and announced "they look like they are on their honeymoon." I never forget that moment.

Little sister is quite the digger. Took 5 wheelbarrows of dirt to repair about half the area she dug up. Gotta find more dirt to finish.

My dog seems to enjoy being on the canoe (and the boat)
He's not the strongest swimmer so we've been practicing. Until then & even then he will wear his life jacket :)

Life jackets are great for dogs. They have that handy strap so you can pull them back in the boat. My dogs grow up on the water, In canoes, rafts, power boats and drift boats.
I used to have a sailboat on Lake Tahoe for years. My two dogs would ride on the top of the cabin. One day with light breezes we got hit by a puff on the big mountain lake. My big BC Chelan, rolled into the lake in over 100 feet of water. She was my all-time best swimmer. She was paddlin along behind the boat, but losing ground. I could not go fast enough to turn around and come back and get her. I just told her in a stern voice to "Go Home." She turned around and paddled away from the boat. I turned around and retrieved her with a boat hook.

Yes. The handles are a huge plus. As you can see in my center console boat the bow is raised up & that's where I fish from. Goofy decided to try & get up there with me and slipped off the side - SPLASH ! I think I panicked a bit more than he did but I was quickly able to lift him & his big butt right back into the boat. Would of been a chore without the handles.

Not sure if I've got the knack of posting photos but if I do, here is one of our pooch Juneau. She loves the canoe and is comfortable in both our tandem and with me in my solo. It's always nice to have her with me out on the water.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time....be well.

Jeez! sorry Doug, get a puppy soon if you haven't already!

a pic of my rescue dog. This one is a pointer "mix" from the shelter. Loves to swim, but she does stay in the canoe good though!

I have had only one dog that could point fish. I used to run the Sacramento River every fall during the king salmon run. My big female BC would stand in the canoe and point her nose at the fish as they approached and sometimes swam under the boat. Great fun.
