It's not canoeing, but it involves a long trip in a boat, on water, with manual propulsion, and it's news. Plus, they are Scottish and want pizza and beer, so that's close enough.

"Three Scottish brothers set a world record Saturday for completing the fastest unsupported row across the full Pacific Ocean."

"Jamie, Ewan and Lachlan Maclean completed the journey in 139 days, arriving in Cairns, Australia. They rowed over 9,000 miles nonstop from Peru, becoming the first team to achieve the full crossing from South America to Australia."

"In the hours before their arrival, the eldest brother, Ewan, uploaded a video calling the marina ahead of their approach. 'Do you have pizza and beer? I repeat, do you have pizza and beer? Over.'”

The following BBC article has more details, pictures and a video:

Likewise. I'm often asked why I go solo and my typical response is that I can count on one hand the people I could enjoy being with 24/7 for weeks at a time. So far, none of them has indicated a desire to crap in the woods.

One notable exception is my youngest brother. I've actually invited him but, after 3 trips to the middle east and various other deployments, he assures me that he has spent entirely too many nights in tents already and has (significantly less than) zero interest.

Which, incidentally, sums up my interest in doing a trip like this. I'm not a fan of big water and I cannot imagine lacking the ability to get out and walk around once in awhile. In fact, I'm pretty sure that, after a month or so, I'd have to test my ability to walk on the water itself. (Yes, I can safely predict the results but I'm still not getting back in that rowboat!)

One other thought: The article says that the previous record was 162 days by solo rower Fyodor Konyukhov. I wonder if he started solo?
