"Me and You and the Red Canoe"

My favorite children’s book author, Arthur Ransome, once said that any book good enough for a child to read is worth reading by an adult. While not about kids canoeing, his Swallows and Amazons is a great story of children camping on islands from sailing dinghies.

    Second hand book store finds........

Here in Connecticut is the Book Barn in Niantic. They've gotten so big that they opened three annexes. One of the annexes has a wonderful maritime section with a selection of canoeing titles. I've been told that there is also an outdoors-camping-section that I keep running out of time to...

Three days, two nights, 3-4 hours from Boston

It is hardly wilderness, but you could launch onto the Connecticut River in Hartford, Ct, and take out at the mouth in Lyme. First night at River Highlands State Park, and the second night at Selden Neck State Park.

    Poll: How Old Are You?

59 years young. My doctor says this analogy is not perfect, but close enough. If one spins a nut onto a bolt and leave it in the backyard to weather, in two years it will be seized with rust. If, however, you go out there every day and spin the nut off and back on the boot, then in two years...

    Anyone paddle at night?

Yes, many times. Absolute magic at night. Twenty five years ago, I courted my girlfriend, now wonderful wife, with a trip on the water under the full moon every month for one year.

Were to find Thule "R" series key.

Any Thule dealer can order keys for you. They just need the numbers on the outside of the lock, or just bring them the towers.

    Your next canoe trip?

Personal circumstances will keep me close to home for the foreseeable future, but I'll try for a simple three day trip on the tidal Connecticut River from Hartford down to Long Island Sound, and maybe an occasional overnight local.

    What advice would you give?

I once knew a gentleman who was an in-demand commercial artist for the advertizing industry. He did package design and advert layouts for many products that we are all familiar with, including the Marlboro Cowboy and the Coors Silver Bullet. His studio was in his home, and one day, one of his...

    Hello from Connecticut

Selden Island on the Connecticut River is a GREAT spot. A wooded hilly island over a mile long with just four well spaced primitive campsites. I do an overnight there every late October as a mental battery recharge. There is always a good chance of a bald eagle sighting, and I one winter I...

    Hello from Connecticut

Hello all, After watching this website for a while I finally joined up. Home is near the coast of Connecticut, near the mouth of the Housatonic River. I've always been interested in simple, well designed and built, aesthetically pleasing, small boats without engines. Small enough that one can...
