I think I'm being picky because you can't see through any of the cracks I mentioned, they're just not as tight as I'd like. I could see being able to see right through the canoe, a bit alarming to people that don't know any different. It would be kinda fun to do, just to get people's reactions...

The dowel is a good idea, I know i won't have room for those clamps soon enough, so thanks for that suggestion. I have found that I could use more Jimmy clamps, but thought maybe it was just me because that's alot of clamps. Lol I feel better knowing it's not just me, so I'll make up a few more...

Progress picture of where I'm at. It's been going pretty good so far. Only really issue I've noticed is, since my strips are just starting to curve more near the stems, the routered area of the strips are leaving a tiny crack. Pretty sure with a little fill, you won't ever notice it. I'm...

    First canoe build

I only had blow outs on a few of the strips, and it didn't seem to help by changing the feed rate. And all the router bits are new, so i can't blame it on dull bits. I'm assuming it was most likely the grain direction because I didn't even think that would matter. and thanks @Kliff , for...

I completely understand what you are saying about the bit lifting the wood grain and didn't even consider that. I could only imagine how much smoother it gets, I'm learning so much, and figuring out different ways to do things.

    First canoe build

Was able to Finally put some time towards the build. I finished up routering the strips and have a few strips installed. Issues I ran into; I couldn't find a big enough featherboard, so i had to improvise. Second issue was, the flute router bit was taking some chunks out of the strips. I noticed...

    First canoe build

The canoe build is going much slow then I was hoping for. Summer is definitely my busiest time of the year. Still trying to get the shop all buttoned up with the exterior siding and finishing the interior walls drywall and pine lumber. However, I was able to get the Jimmy clamps and bungee cord...

Jim, As for the skilsaw method, I will definitely try it for the next build. However, I may need to purchase a different skilsaw. The ones I have are 15amp, but they are called wormdrive skilsaws which weigh approx 15lbs as opposed to regular skilsaws at approx 8-9 lbs. Think mine will get very...

    First canoe build

Jim, That's a good tip. I've run all my strips through the router for the first side. I'll setup so they go between the router bit and fence for the opposite side. Thanks

    First canoe build

That's good to know, I thought having to go 1 size bigger was because I did something wrong. What are the benefits of using 3/16 strips as opposed to 1/4 besides weight reduction of course?

    First canoe build

You guys are giving me good arguments for the skilsaw, ill definitely give it a try. I have all the strips I need, so it will have to wait for the next canoe build. Travis

    First canoe build

I went and purchased a bandsaw in hopes of having less wood waste because of its thin blade, however it was a disaster when I tried ripping my first board. I have next to no experience with bandsaws. So I'm sure that's the reason behind the failure. I ended up using the tablesaw, which seemed to...

Thanks for the response, I also have a single car garage apart from this shop, so that helps in keeping the shop uncluttered. Mind you, the wife keeps suggesting more and more things to store in the shop. I'm still working on the sheetrock, im a little hesitant to completely finish it off...

    First canoe build

I am using the bead and cove, figured that was the easiest way. I bought 1/4" bits, however I found that it was leaving a tiny lip on my strips. So I purchased 5/16" bead and cove, which seems to have fix my issue. I'm assuming all my strips that i ripped must have been a hair over 1/4". Travis

Thanks for the response Jim I am going to put wheels under the strong back, I bought threaded casters so im able to adjust the height to make things level. The flanged T-nuts I ordered from amazon are taking forever to arrive, the local hardwares and Canadian tire wants $11 for each nut and...
