    Ice conditions in Northeast

That site is crowdsourced and hence incomplete. I wll say that snow pack is still a factor in northern Maine.. We have a bit with a foot or more ( we seem to be in a target area) coming tomorrow per the Weather Channel hysteria hucksters. The US Biathlon takes place in Ft Kent this weekend.

Stay safe in this big storm ...

had 13 in or so during Ember What a sweet storm that was. Fluff then comes in Finn like my wet granddog a mess. 5 inches of snow and then rain but the snow did not all melt like the bozos on the Weather Channel down in Atlanta said it would. Since it is now 47 I will wait and let melt...

    Carbon Fiber/Aramid Layup - Why?

efficiency.. a hull that is wobbly won't paddle as efficiently on flat water as the waves will change the hull shape. I have a 23 lb RapidFire and its getting loaded on the car soon to paddle in Florida. Florida has oyster bars which are sharper than shale Plus the rivers do have limestone as...

How do you know the water temperature?

Huh? Where do I find a meter long thermometer? The thermocline matters and if my bottom half will be in 38 degre water I would care more about that than the surface 55.

Upper Missouri River Guides: Montana Canoeing

Really no troubles. We did from Coal Banks to Kipp in five days! We did manage to scramble up mud banks to explore fascinating abandoned homesteads. I am not a history buff very much but I was intrigued by imaginging the difficulties people in the past encountered. We all know that no two...

Upper Missouri River Guides: Montana Canoeing

And we did it in May. Never again. The geese were mating and pooping and the 24 hour noise was awful. It was muddy and high and the cows were in it too. We did the Green and the Missouri Breaks in one trip west. We froze on the Green and it was 103 degrees on the Missouri. Go figure...

How to carry canoe on F150 Supercrew short bed with trailer?

Your Smart ( a$$) truck ought to have a manual override or be smart enough to turn its own lights off when not running down the highway. I just can't wrap my head around this scenario! You don't have carkeys or keyholes? Yikes.. My downer brain is imagining you coming off a canoe trip to a...

Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

this stroke wasn't used for hunting. Used by tandem teams to haul hundreds of pounds of camp gear. If you have ever seen a logging camp the stuff is not light! And back in the day paddlers knew how to forage for materials in the woods for repairs. I know of just a few with the skills now to...

Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

No disrespect but the paddle does not really come out of the water. Very poor demo. He is going in circles as there is no correction force The only t hing correct is yes you can fulcrum off the knee as long as the knee is not above the gunwale. As a matter of fact the stroke is usually done...

Video: Tom MacKenzie builds rib/plank/Ceconite canoe

I initially flunked tacking. You see, the brass tacks are meant to clinch when they meet the metal on the plug. I initially missed the metal strip quite a few times and learned a lot by having to take them out and redo them. My lesson in patience and go slow and do it right that day.

How to carry canoe on F150 Supercrew short bed with trailer?

Sorry for the boorish on my part laugh. The Casita is a small trailer and at 17x7 feet the inside is pretty well occupied.. But I do sometimes wish for a rear door on an RV. Aside from toy haulers that doesn't seem to exist anymore. I haven't seen many pickup camper caps lately.

Video: Tom MacKenzie builds rib/plank/Ceconite canoe

Many happy hours I spent standing on that gym mat. I loved ironing for once! I too miss Tom so much and no his canoes are not being made by anyone else. Loon Works was a sole proprietorship. I love Roy Ivey' s hands up anticipating Tom might drop the boat.. or was that allelulia it came off...

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

I think it all depends on your happy place. Happy place can change. What drives me nuts nuts nuts is people asking about the best kayak to do Algonquin portages with!

    Moose — Stories, Photos, Videos

spot on.. Been charged by one in my woods just over my property line. In May they are hungry and cranky and want nothing between them and their newly emerged browse. We see moose every canoe trip in Northern Maine ( not so much here). One moose stepped on my boat in camp . What noise and I was...

Florida's Designated Paddling Trails - Very Detailed Site

The Everglades is fascinating! One trip is not sufficient. I have never just followed the Wilderness Waterway It is a one note as it does not visit more than two ecosystems ( the Glades has 8). I have gone north of it and also along the Gulf Shore. Done 10 10 day trips and want to do one...
