    Gerber River Shorty

yes, hadn't thought about rescue/river knives in years. When I went looking after this thread, those Bear Claws look the best bet to me also. But, now I'm old and cautious and don't paddle over class III and that seldom, hoping my old tech Gerber will suffice..

    Mora knives for camp.

thanks - went and bought a couple of those.. the special edition Ukraine one for tripping and a smaller one just to see. Handsome knives, better-looking than the Moras to my eye, I guess I'm a knife collector now. Never thought I had the collector gene but recently started on old fly reels...

First swim of the year – Lower Poplar on the Dead (ME)

thanks for report, appreciated the steely dan in the weblog post ;-) nasty long swim there, no good way out, just keep swimming.. yes I've done boat rescues midrapid that left me in parlous not to say perilous spots.. would not have chosen this line, but here we are, engage the core and max...

    Hello from Western CO

welcome ! I'm on the wrong side of the mountains, get over there when family and work permit.. at Black Rocks in a salvaged Mad River Explorer, 1976 model.. far east on the west slope, upper CO river, my boater's-eye view..

    Gerber River Shorty

mine is from the 90s, still have it, though it's worn out several lifejackets ;-) glad to say I've never needed it on the river except to scrape the last stubborn bits out of the bottom of the PB jar.. no rust issues at all, maybe that's from living in the mountain West where things are dry...

    Mora knives for camp.

I have my grandfather's carving set, made in Sheffield of good English steel, probably early 20th century. A couple strokes on the steel every time I carve something keeps it cutting well, it's better than an electric carving knife in my mind. Once a year we host Greek Easter, cook a lamb on the...

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

on my dominant R side, no pry off the gunnels, unless/until I am very tired indeed.. typically not a lot of force in the correction part of the stroke, bring the power to the hip, let it drift back then a quick turn of the blade and pull out with R hand for a correction, only when the blade is...

Bent vs. straight paddle - direct comparison plus bonus footage

but, have they ever tested it ? ;-) there's a lot of superstition in all racers, and unwillingness to change from tradition.. I follow an Olympic flatwater sprint racer on instagram and he uses a straight paddle.. that boat must be pretty quick, holding 5mph in my Wenonah Vagabond 14.5'...

    Millbrook Outrage

very nice indeed.. mine's still working, low water on the S. Platte, dropping the old Outrage into a slot..

    Hood loop tie downs

thanks, that is helpful - I also found $40 tie down loops for sale, that's ridiculous. Note the grommet kit is now $9 at BigBoxCo.. since I'm also going to make some webbing cradles in the topper for paddles etc, I invested in a grommet kit ;-) The cradle idea came from a house painter who...

    Saving Another RX Penobscot 16

yes, ME isn't close as such ;-) but if combined with another trip, to paddle the Penobscot river maybe.. ha. the mohawk paddles will be fine to start with, but a good paddle is a joy and a pleasure.. started with those, then upgraded to werner fiberglass. Now have a Bending Branches basic...

    Old Town Penobscot Models?

extremely late but here to confirm, the 186 weighs 85lb not 75.. I stepped on a scale with it, then gave it to my college-age son and his friends to portage in BWCA.. bwahaha

    Week of BWCA Wind

didn't see this thread until now.. we were out on Mudro Lake - Crooked - Fourtown loop for 9 days during those storms.. it was a thing ;-) surprised by one set of winds out in a big fetch on Crooked, that was as much excitement as I needed for the year. Otherwise my friend Jeff had an InReach...

    Saving Another RX Penobscot 16

I used the knock-down wood gunnel kit on a Royalex Mad River Explorer salvage project, it has been some years now and no issues. Modern epoxy is good enough.. Also the kit I used has modified shiplap joints rather than a pure scarf, discussion at...

Rescue on the Franklin River, Tasmania

good story, thank you for posting.. this struck me, "It’s a simple rock hop, one he’s made hundreds of times in his 50 years of rafting." rock hopping is a young man's game. I don't rock hop anymore, have not for ten years at least (65 now). It's one small hop for an old man, one big break...

    Photo of the day

suffering from a paddling deficit, sneaked out after work a new heronry, dozens of nests, the herons had strong loud opinions about everything.. an arsenal of rods is not enough for me to catch bigger fish ;-) at least there is the majesty of nature to contemplate, viz. the two goose...

What Size Spinning Rod for Paddlecraft?

6' Browning rod from the 1980s, works great ;-) broke an inch off the tip during a wrangle in the dark with some bushes I wasn't expecting.. still feels the same to me.

    Cooking Fish

have done similar, using a Bakepacker which isn't made anymore.. fish into an oven bag, with some olive oil and lemon, steam it that way. Not sure why I stopped doing that, huh.. (looks for old Bakepacker)
