    Float Plane Stories

1999 went to work in Charlevoix, MI an hour north of Traverse City. Found a great little house on the Susan lake, sorta long and narrow. There was a float plane at the other end of the lake I had paddled by and admired numerous times. Me and my lab would go canoeing almost every day after...

    Independence or Malecite

Thanks for all the input. Bought my third $200 canoe, a Mad River Independence. Missing gunwales but came with a new seat and thwarts. Will be needing a little gel coat help.

Canoe Art: Paintings, Sketches, Sculpture, Architecture

I bought this print around 1994 in the Mystic Seaport Mariners Museum. Fly fishing in my canoe has always been a passion. Print by Roger Blum (sp) titled ‘A Good Sign’.

What is the ideal canoe dog for a solo canoeist?

My lab is a great water dog and more importantly she obeys. She was a high powered field trial girl. I made her sit in the canoe for a couple of weeks before going to the water. She and I survived an Argosy that was more canoe than my skills provided. We live along the ICW so plenty of...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

A much better rifle imo was the marlin .35 cal over the 30-30. I doubt any rifle will ever surpass the venerable 30-30, it was almost a standard for so long. I use Buffalo Bore and other mfgs ammo is certainly changing the game somewhat. I am a believer in 12ga slugs and my old Winchester...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

Buffalo Bore ammo has quite the reputation. Used in my 12ga pump and my 9mm. Traveling alone and being in my 70s have changed my perspective especially in grizzly country. i mostly avoid those areas these days by myself.

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

I think it is a personal decision that we all make for ourselves. I hiked and car camped all through the 70s and 80s and it was never a thought. I continue to truck camp at 71 but things have changed. I see people are different, the times are different. My safety is contingent on my...
