Good fish/depth finder and what power source?

I contemplated getting set up with someone as it seemed like it would be cool exploring some back country lakes with one. Ultimately chose against it. Seemed like some cumbersome extra gear to lug along, useless for 80% of the fishing I do from a canoe and concerns about how long the battery...

Good fish/depth finder and what power source?

…a market for small marine electronics and mounts. Garmin Striker series are popular (4 or 5 in screens). Powered with a rechargeable 12V battery like the size of a motorcycle battery.

    Canoecopia 2024

Website is now updated. Probably will just do a full day on Saturday. I see there’s also the BikeORama event happening at the same time, same place. Will pop in there as well. The event grounds are big enough where I don't think these two events will interfere with each other.

The Psychology of Choosing the "Perfect" Canoe

Even more annoying when you find yourself second guessing nothing but your current canoe’s color.

    Canoecopia 2024

The schedule is up online…but seems awfully sparse. Seems like the presentations are cut back about 80% from previous years. Is it just an incomplete list?

    Bannock Sacrilege

I’ve done it. It’s actually the best way to make an edible bannock.

    BWCA Permits

Never done BWCA, but do you pay a fee for a permit? I know with my state’s park system (WI) there’s a fee to book campsites. You can cancel a reservation but you only get a portion back, not sure what their formula is. That gives a financial incentive to not book unless you’re serious. Also...

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

I usually wear shirts made for running. Lightweight stretchy fabric that is comfortable and drys quickly. Years of triathlons and marathons I got two dresser drawers full. Most races you sign up for give you these technical shirts with their logo and sponsors on it.

    Canoecopia 2024

Eagerly anticipating the presentation schedule. Should be out in the next week or two. That will determine if I come for one day or the whole weekend. Objectives this year:: see if the guys at Swift can talk me into a Keewaydin Combi. Buy a double paddle for soloing. Learn what I can about...

CJ: 7 most common mistakes of wilderness canoeists

Learned #2 the hard way. Made a quick stop to check out an island campsite on a windy day. Thought I dragged the canoe far enough up the beach. Scouted a couple minutes, walk back to beach and the canoe’s gone. Frantically scanning the area and I see it drifting out in the lake...

    Sewing projects

Recently got bit by the sewing bug when doing a small tweak on my hammock. Now I got a heavy duty Singer and searching for projects. Honing my skills hemming pants and making hats. Preparing to start a project making a pair of shorts which will be the most complicated project thus far...

    Litter, garbage and trash

Used to scuba dive N.Wisconsin lakes when I was younger. Tires and rusted out 55-gallon barrels are common on lake bottoms. Regular trash is plastic bait containers. Those things are all over the lake bottoms. Problem is some areas make if so difficult to properly dispose of items, like...

    Seasonal withdrawal

This entire year was a write off. Blew out my shoulder in May just as I was preparing for my first trip of the year. Was demoralizing having to pack my stuff back away with one arm in the sling. Concluded the injury was severe enough and cancelled all my other planned trips. Had surgery in...

    Solo - fears and boredom

I blew out my right shoulder in May while weight lifting (bench press). Not fun at all, I heard it crunch as it gave out. Had surgery in July. Hit the physical therapy hard and recovered very well. However, that put an end to all my summer plans. As for identifying animal sounds I just...

    Solo - fears and boredom

Managed to just do another solo trip. This was my first and only trip of the year due to a shoulder injury and surgery. Not with the canoe unfortunately,. I bushwacked backpacked with a hammock in a State Forest. This time around I enjoyed the night. Didn’t sleep much because I didn’t...

Inukshuks, Cairns or Rock Piles: What to Do or Not Do?

Only ones I encountered have been due to misguided people just having to leave their mark. I consider the desire to always leave signs of humans out in nature a travesty. Therefore I consider it a duty to knock them down.

    Paddled with a bad motor

Congrats I’m now 9 weeks post surgery from a particularly bad rotator cuff tear. It’s still a long road to recovery. No way am I able to lift the canoe anytime soon so not going to be able to do a canoe trip this year. Might be realistic to think about a short backpacking trip in mid Oct.
