tracking in bow seat vs center seat

That makes sense. If you paddle all the way behind you the forward stroke essentially becomes a sweep, sounds like. So maybe more feathering and less pulling!

tracking in bow seat vs center seat

It is so interesting how many different responses you get. My father paddled an OT camper for many many years from the bow and swears by doing the J as a rudder way behind him. But perhaps that is not the most efficient method.

tracking in bow seat vs center seat

So the J behind my hip is part of the problem. Hm. Where should the paddle be in relation to my hip when my wrist turns over to perform the J? I do find it harder to turn my thumb down all the way in this seat unless I'm kneeling. Too far from the water.

tracking in bow seat vs center seat

Hey all. So I have a dagger reflection 15 and I love it. I believe it's asym. It has a dedicated center seat which I had installed from eds canoes that doubles as a yoke. I sometimes paddle in the bow facing backwards and on my last paddle felt that tracked better. When in the center seat, it...

    should I upgrade?

This is what I was hoping you all would say. I'm getting an eds canoe center seat/yoke put on it right now. In addition to being easy to turn, it tracks so so well. If I want to fish, I can just move around in the boat, tie on some bait, I can go from kneeling to sitting with plenty of security.

    should I upgrade?

Currently, I have two canoes. A Nova Craft Fox Solo 14, and a royalex dagger reflection 15 Initially, I got the fox so I could solo and because I wanted something lighter and easier to carry. I really like the reflection 15. Great stability, goes fast enough for me, turns on a dime, tracks...

    wind.

If the water is extra calm and it's cold, I feel fine sticking to shore in local lakes, but wouldn't mess with a river right now. I'll be tarp camping this weekend instead of paddling. Looks like another blustery day.

    wind.

It was windy as all get out. Gusty, even! I tried a short paddle to get some fire wood and the bow abruptly turned immediately. A fool's errand, but a nice camp was has nonetheless. not sure how to post pictures from my phone.

    wind.

Yep. Worst case scenario for lake number 2 is I don't get to paddle much. I'll still get to do off season drive in camping with practically nobody there. Sleep under the stars.

    wind.

If all works out, I'll be headed on a paddling trip to a different location for new year's eve/day. No wind forecasted. Just some rain:)

So, the lake is a very large one and it's quite deep. I remember learning the J (I'm not an expert but have no issues tracking a boat nowadays) on a small lake in North Carolina. It was a heavier boat, probably a discovery series as it was a rental and that seems to be the go-to rental boat...

    wind.

Wind speeds start at 9 mph in the morning and reach 13 mph by evening. They don't appear to let up at all on the proposed planned day.

when planning a paddling trip, where do you draw the line with wind speed before opting not to go? I want another trip on my time off. Wind speeds for the upcoming weekend are listed at "up to 11 mph." It's a short paddle to camp, but I want to paddle around leisurely, also.

paddler position in tandem and boat responsiveness

That is exactly what I'm going to do for this canoe. That is bloody brilliant! Thank you!

paddler position in tandem and boat responsiveness

Thanks, all. Yes, I do have a detachable yoke, I just find it a pain and it's tougher to find the proper place to clamp it down as compared to my solo boat. It sometimes slips off. Perhaps I need better technique with it. As for side slipping: yes..that's what I want it do do when performing...

paddler position in tandem and boat responsiveness

As some of you know I have a reflection 15. It has a dedicated center seat, slanted downward for said use when kneeling. While paddling tandem today and yesterday, I noticed it tracked better than it did in the solo seat. I do like how a skulling draw works in the center seat, but I'm not sure...

    tandem stability?

Yep. These are the days and nights I live for. And I forgot how much I missed this canoe after paddling my solo!

    tandem stability?

All in how you look at it. I got to put a canoe on the car, paddle around when nobody was there. We had the entire island to ourselves. Beautiful fire, deep sleep, great conversation, lots of laughter, and lounging in the hammock. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

    tandem stability?

Unfortunately, my friend got a text message from her friend. Her car had broken down and she needed help. I had just cut down a decent oak and placed it on the fire. Moments away from sleep, she comes to the tent and asks "are you asleep?" We had to pack up pretty quickly.
