What to ask for in red cedar for stripping?

Yes and yes. I used tape to repair the scars and align misbehaving strips and the wailing chair was not called into service. Bead and cove is the standard. No argument. I have personally found it to be unnecessary and I think it not unreasonable to share my experience. Everyone can make their...

What to ask for in red cedar for stripping?

I found the length of the RB made it more difficult to follow tighter contours. I I've only built 2 and both were done beveled and I'd do it again. Note that not every strip needs it. Place the plane on top of a strip where it contacts a form. Tip the plane over so that it's leaning on the form...

The Freedom 17 build is in there, too.

What to ask for in red cedar for stripping?

What continues to surprise me is how little wood it takes, especially when you are looking at the uncut pile of lumber. It never looks like enough. I took the measurements of the largest form, divided by strip width = ~65 strips. 4" wide lumber, thin kerf blade, roughly 12 strips per board...

I'm struggling here because I don't want this to come off as criticism. You have my utmost respect and I think it would be wise of me to not try and follow you anywhere. The Manic, solo, is not something I would attempt - I generally do not like big water. Yet I feel compelled to remark at the...

You had said that your load was 300lbs and that you were less than half that. I understand now. On day 5 I would have been on chicken number 3.

    Felt safe until now

Blackhawk circling a mile away from me for about an hour yesterday. Between Kelvingrove, Glenelm, and Beith. Assuming related but there's been a lot of border activity, too.

A strip an hour?! I haven't timed myself, and I don't recall doing more than 6 strips total per session, but maybe 30 minutes - so 5 minutes per strip give or take. I let those strips set-up for at least 30 minutes before going back to do 6 more. Operations: - Bevel the last strip that is...

My first build - Bob Special

Wow - thank you. I have copies of both Gil Gilpatrick's "Building a Strip Canoe" and Ted Moores' "Canoecraft." I took direction from both, often choosing the easiest option. I've said it before, you'd really have to outdo yourself to build an ugly one.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

    I gave up motorcycles last year. First bike at age 9 - a Yamaha MX80, then an XR100, and later an XR250R ('93). For road I started with a BMW F650ST, then a 2003 Triumph Tiger ("girlie") - a 10-year hiatus - a 1974 CB360G, and finally a Moto Guzzi V7 II. I wasn't riding very much, felt guilty...

The real sneak is if you take exit 14 (highway 201 south) off the 20 you bypass the 30's toll.

Bead and Cove vs Other Methods?

Tape helps, as do spring clamps (or any clamp, for that matter). Edit: ...and a couple of strokes with 60 grit takes care of the rest.

Bead and Cove vs Other Methods?

I've only built 2, but both were done without bead and cove. I have no complaints but that may be akin to not knowing what chocolate tastes like.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Right now I'm "enjoying" a week off from "work." That is to say, I'm running around the house trying to kick the punch list's butt before hunting season and winter. Otherwise, my hobbies are wildly varied: sewing my own gear (camping, tool bags/rolls, etc); reloading for rifle; the occasional...

I own a Robo-Bevel and used it on my Bob Special build. I started using it on my Freedom 17 build, but opted early on to use the mini-plane on its own - I explain how in the first post of that thread.
