    What the Shell?

I had a Gortex coat that I used for years. Recently, before a trip, I knew the coat was old, so I sprayed it with the recommended product and I thought it was waterproof again. I wore it this Fall in rain and I got soaked to the bone. So there I was miles away from the car, soaking wet with...

Great Lakes ice coverage - Winter 2026

Very interesting. I wonder how the ice coverage will affect the Spring thaw.

Candle Lantern: Safely use in a tent? How to clean?

As a young family, We did a lot of camping in are old canvas tent. My son was very young at the time and the wife needed light so we used the Coleman gas lantern. To my surprise it gave off enough heat to keep the tent comfortable. From that time on I used the lantern to help heat the tent.

    Winter conversation

I have to agree with Boatman53, too many people, too much privilege, attitude and money to get want they want.

    Winter conversation

I believe the games has grown a lot since 1980. Just think of the housing needed for all the athletes, support staff, TV crews and other people. I believe accommodation would extend from Plattsburg to Inlet and beyond. I think Lake Placid would lose the small town atmosphere it enjoyed after...

    Winter conversation

This may be a little off topic of tripping, but then again it does involve the Adirondacks, which in a way involves us. There is talk in upstate NY about the possibility of a third Olympics in Lake Placid. I've been thinking about this and I guess right now I have mixed feelings . On one...

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

I measured 16" of snow at my house. I spent all day plowing, I'm running out of space to push it. Durning a break to get warm I checked the weather forecast, it stays cold at least till the end of the month. I should be accustom to this. Cold winter weather is no stranger to northern Penna. I...

    The Canteen

I would never put anything but good potable water in mine. To clean simply rinse with a little bleach and water to sanitized, then rinse out well with clear water. Never had any problems.

    The Canteen

I have always been a fan and carried a large, covered metal canteen until it started to leak. It was easy to carry and to me water seems to taste better out of a metal container. The military type canteens are good for hunting or day trips but seem too small for camp. I really don't know why...

Stay Out of the Woods in June!

Yes Glenn, I was given Prednisone. I really didn't have any real pain with the bite, I'm glad I listened to my wife and went to the ER as quickly as I did.

Stay Out of the Woods in June!

Here are the results of a bug bite I had a few years ago. We think it was a spider but not sure. The wife made me go to ER as soon as we found it. I'm glad I did. Had all the test and blood work done then given some really strong med. The pills not only took care of the bug bite but it also...

That is a darn good design. I have to give you three attaboys for that. I have a problem with snow plows and my mail boxes. With your permission I'd like to borrow your design for my mail box.

    Winter projects

My trip with lowangle al this past fall convinced me that I need more organization in my tent. Plus, I can use it as a much-needed table. So, I guess I'll be building a wanigan this winter. I'm not sure the exact size yet. I'm still trying to figure out what I'll be placing in it.

Canoe seat replacement parts - Drilling dowel holes

Boatman53, The guide you show is much more reliable for a true cut than the dowel centers. I would certainly recommend the guide over the dowel centers with the guide giving better results. The guide helps prevent the unsteady hand from moving where the dowel centers only mark the center and...

Canoe seat replacement parts - Drilling dowel holes

I believe Chip has the right answer, simply clamp the two members together and dill them at the same time. Dowel points like the ones in the pictures are designed to be used with a brad point drill bit.. Trying to drill by hand, machine bits has a tendency to "walk" or wonder just a little bit

    Mégiscane River, Québec

What can I say, the report is just outstanding. I can't believe you drove all the way from Florida, and here I complain about driving a few hours.
