As one of those who's been able to do a couple of those weeks-long trips as well as many local day paddles, I'm glad that you took the time to share the TR. I find the trade-off between solitude and ease of logistics to be acceptable and local stuff shouldn't be overlooked.
The Potomac is on...
I too was a bit worried about weather / water levels leading up to your trip. I'm really glad that it worked out for you guys and thanks for the TR; I really enjoyed reading it.
Pretty smart little lizard. Shake the vending machine and see if something tasty falls out. Unfortunately for him, that discovery is very likely to cost him dearly.
@mitscan1, I don't know where you live but, if it's within driving distance of Butler, PA, the WPASCR is happening next weekend and it is geared toward solo canoes with many collectors and other aficionados in attendance.
PS: welcome.
Interesting... so Alan's a wrasslin' fan... (or, at least, familiar with the terminology)
Most of the Army Corps campsites around here have been closed over the years but not due to vandalism. The money generated from the camping fees & launch fees was less then the cost to collect the funds...
The seat is overly wide as an experiment or sorts. I'm figuring that, as I slide to the rails, the boat will automatically heel. I probably don't lean the hull enough on turns so the seat may force me to. 🤷♂️
If I were to build a seat for you, I could put one of the spreaders in the...
Hmm... interesting but not much room for the tent & food barrel in one of those. I did notice that none of them are using a bent shaft... No animal tails either.
Honestly, I enjoy watching the sprinters but it looks too much like work to me.
I may do some testing this winter. I'm hoping to build one more solo (Alan sent me his Bloodvein II plans) and I suppose, having recently become a grandfather, I should put together a tandem at some point. I'm thinking 4 or 5 should be old enough to walk portage trails so I've got a little...
That's quite an adventure despite the need to abort.
Had you 3 known each other previously or was it "take a chance that we'll get along... they seems ok online"?
Note: I've been over and over why 100 feet was too short and it simply can't be. Then I remembered that I'd used "a few feet" for another project (because, of course, there was lots of green left over from the Freedom build). This recollection does not solve the immediate problem but, for...
While the canal itself is mostly dry, the Potomac would be a nice paddle and enough of the lock keeper's houses are available for rent that it remains a bucket list trip for me. If I ever get it done, I'll have to remember to check out the book prior to the trip.
My first car was a '79 Jeep CJ5 & I still own it. In fact, in 45 years of driving, I've owned a total of 6 vehicles. I currently own 4 of them (although the Ranger is destined for salvage as soon as I get time).
I have noticed that and I've wondered about it. I really enjoy building these and I'm hoping that at least some of the viewers are reading with intent to start a build of their own. If that is the case, they are, hopefully, aware that the members of this forum are extremely willing and able to...
Nice TR Al and great pics! "Picture heavy"? Yep. "overdone"? Nope. I'm not sure if/when I might visit the ADKs so it's nice to see them through your pics.
Enjoyable read right up to the spoiler. That's a bummer but I'm glad to hear that you've got a positive outlook and that it's working out for you. Paddle on.
PS: I totally agree w/ PaddlingPitt, the extraction and the drive home are interesting parts of this trip. Thanks for sharing it.
