    Paddling in the snow.

Goretex waders sure make it more comfortable when it's 31 degrees and snowing.

    Grand Laker

This one was a 20' built by Bill Shamel in Grand Lake Stream. Amazing how fast a 4hp 4 stroke Suzuki can push it. You wouldn't want to paddle it very far though.

    Grand Laker

Spent a few days on West Grand Lake, Maine with a buddy in his new square sterned Grand Laker. They are just about the perfect boat for the big lakes. Lobster stew shore lunch over the fire, a little fly fishing, a little trolling. Hard to beat it.

    Freeze Dried Meal Choices?

I've gotten a few GOOD-TO-GO meals lately, made in Maine. Expensive, but pretty darn good. I usually get those Dr. McDougals soups that come in a cardboard cup and put it in a ziplock.

    New favorite knife!

Just make sure it's single blade, double paddle is frowned upon here, if you've been following! Doug, you've been a great overseerer, hope you keep at it!

    New favorite knife!

Had a LT. Wright knife, large workhorse in D2 steel, with orange removeable G10 scales. I replaced them with some sambar stag I had tucked away for years, peened the nickel silver pins and lanyard tube, it's my new favorite knife. Show us the knife you take tripping, whether it's a $10 kitchen...

    Wildlife Hatchet

I once hewed a dead spruce log into a flat, short bench with my wildlife hatchet on one of the Lake Lila campsites. Last time I was back, someone must have burned it, firewood is getting impossible to find there, it's been so picked over.

    Wildlife Hatchet

I have both the wildlife hatchet and small forest axe. I actually prefer the wildlife hatchet for what I use it for, which is not much, mostly hewing tent stakes and pounding them in with the poll, tap splitting and batoning medium sized rounds for firewood, other small camp chores. It's light...

History of the De Havilland Beaver

And the kitty at Talkeetna Air Taxi was named Beaver. I'm guessing he was named after the plane, not the dam building rodents, and not the lady parts.

History of the De Havilland Beaver

I flew into the Alaska Range in a Beaver a couple of times for alpine climbing trips. Mooses Tooth trip 2009.....

Hmmmm.....Marten, I do pizzas often at home, maybe time to try it over a campfire.

Deck rot, weep holes and gunk removal?

Scrub the crud with a brush when you can, oil it because that's easier than epoxies and varnishes, keep it stored well and under cover when not in use. Everything made from wood, or anything alive for that matter, has a limited lifespan and deathspan, it all breaks down eventually. Sounds like...

    upping my camp kitchen game

Thanks, yeah, pliers would make good pot grippers, and great for any general repair that requires the best possible grip. I usually take a Leatherman for that reason.

    upping my camp kitchen game

While I'm in the mode of adding to my kit, what camp kitchen item do you find essential, that most folks haven't even thought of?

    upping my camp kitchen game

I usually keep my camp cooking pretty simple and often go with just a pot, stove, and mug. But this year I'm adding a frying pan and I just made a little maple cutting board to nest with my grill. Looking forward to bringing more real food on trips.
