Owning a canoe while living in a city, apartment, condo or high-rise

I had a year long job just outside of Sacramento and we lived in a two bedroom Condo, We bought an Old town Disco and kept it in the second bed room. The only way we could get it in and out was through the window. That was in our previous life when we were both strong. Now weI would need some...

    Aging Adjustments

Here it is: https://sites.google.com/siteflkeyskayaktrips/ The only thing is we haven't kept it up to date, and I know since Hurricane Irma and other things some of the launches are no longer good, so they so should be checked out prior to planning a paddle there Jack

    Aging Adjustments

Getting old sucks I I turned old at age 85 and for the last year have been fighting cancer. I still paddle my kayak, canoe and SUP , but the distances and speeds have dropped down to a quarter of what they used to be and if my mind keeps going the way it has been I'll need Nanci (my better...

    Canoe Theft While Traveling

I travel with two bikes and a tandem kevlar canoe and I do similar to what WillDerness does You can get vinyl covered cable dog runs at Wally World. Just cut the snap clip off one end and you"ll Have a metal loop left there and a loop at the other end. I install the cable around the bars...

Trip report on Noatak/Colville Rivers in Gates of the Arctic NP and National Petroleum Reserve?

We paddled the Noatak many moons ago using Ally Pack fold up back pack canoes. On one stop we climbed a mountain, which the guide said had never been climbed before. On the lower section we left our "Juneau Sneakers" after we got above the tussocks/perma-frost. It was a wonderful trip Jack L

Used kevlar canoes - what to inspect for?

As the owner of several Kevlar ultralight canoes, I would look out for deep scratches that expose the kevlar fabric. If it has them you should repair them with epoxy before putting the canoe in water. Jack L

    Preferred tripping style ?

Same here Glen. The only one I enjoy paddling with is my wife Nanci since she enjoys the same exploring that I like while others just want to gab and scare all the wild life for miles away. We paddle silently and only talk when we must Jack L

Poll: How often do you paddle alone (one boat) vs. with a group?

I always paddle with my wife. Sometimes tandem and sometimes with our solos. Occasionally at a put in if some one asks us if they can join us, naturally we don't say no. On those times we might make some new friends or we say never again with them

    Bears in the ADKs

I know they roam through Old Forge looking for garbage cans that have been left out and lots of times people wake up to a mess. One year at the camp ground where we stayed for the 90 miler one came through. I consider them harmless unless you are between one of them and its cubs, or some food...

    Outside canoe storage

If it was me and I was in that situation, I would just wrap the whole canoe in a poly tarp. Then tie a rope around it in several places, or wind a rope around it so the wind won't blow it off, or critters won't get in. I would keep it off the ground with saw horses, concrete blocks or something...

The first canoe you ever PADDLED and the circumstances

Thank you Not paddling right now. Last week end would have been our 14th Adirondack 90 miler and man did we ever miss it.! I am in the process of battling prostate cancer that has metastasized to my bones. According to the doctors, in six months I should be back to doing every thing I always...
