Milk River, Alberta - Del Bonita to Writing on Stone Provincial Park

Thanks for the memories. A buddy and I did the Milk in '65 in a tin-can canoe that was either attracting rocks or sticking to them. Had a few prairie rattlers hide under our tent fly to get out of the rain one night. Got tired of catching and eating pike but it beat the kraft dinners by week 2...

    Snake Stories

I just love having staring contests with water snakes. But they usually win!

    Snake Stories

The day I got bitten by a rattlesnake. As I spent a few weeks every year kayaking in Massasauga rattlesnake country, I'm quite familiar with their insect-like high pitched rattle. It's a medium volume "zzzzzzzt" unlike the rattlesnakes heard when growing up in the prairies. My usual kayak...

    Back to northern Quebec

Must be quite the road to get in there. I'm jealous.

    gelcoat cleanup

Hi and sorry for the delay in replying. It sure looked like a clearcoat of some kind to me too. The manufacturer's answer to my query: "your canoe 100% has a clear gel coat on it over a Silver Barracuda cloth." So there! Apparently clear vinylester gelcoat is put on thinner than coloured...

    gelcoat cleanup

My clear gelcoat hull could really use some cleaning up to try to bring down the hundreds of scratches it's collected. Any ideas? Would a light sanding work of something much more? thanks

    Tripwire campsite warning devices

well that m1 anti-handling device sure looks like the micro tripping units sold by triggercanons. we can now see where their idea came from. any brilliant ideas why i can't use capitals. when i try i get a tab and a shift gives me a blank space

    Thanks Glenn!

WOOOWE! After months of not being able to log in and post, I can now add my 2.5cents when not needed. Many thanks Glenn. Most appreciated.

    A lightweight "stand-up-able" solo canoe?

FWIW I've been standing and walking up and down my Swift Raven for the better part of 30 years now. Fantastic WW tripping canoe.

    Strap Yoke Variation

Thanks Mike. I"ve always thought that tighter was better, but now thinking about it, that's more of a drum effect. My 2" military grade ladder lock buckle never failed me on my older 46 pounder so that's what I'll try in the spring, just not as tight. Cheers Ted

    Strap Yoke Variation

I've been using the seat belt strap-yoke variation with my 46 lb Shearwater for over 15 years. It's great and a real quickie for short portages. But with the sides flexing when walking I find it good for short portages only as the bouncing gets quite bad. Now that my new-to-me 32 pound...

    Wanigan straps and carry handles

Looks good Robin. If you get the chance, could you give us some info on measurements and thickness of plywood. That and the the overall empty weight. As you can tell, you've given me an idea! What do you keep in it besides beer, bannock and beans? Cheers Ted

    Knife maintenance

Thanks for the Chuckhawkes url. A great history of this beautiful knife. I have 3 already. The #1, the #4 survival and my sweetheart #3, their Army complete with C.A.F. engraving, Truth, Duty Valour. Definitely time to get my sharpening skills back on track. Very much appreciated, cheers Ted

    3 Canoes on 1 roof

Three cross bars. Two on the bed and one over the cab. Probably didn't need 3 as the middle one was somewhat superfluous but sure made for an easy setup. Thanks again.

    Knife maintenance

Looks like a Grohman #1 knife which is my favourite and Canadian made as well. I wonder which came first. The Othello or the Grohman? Thanks for sharing as it gives me the hint to get my knives sharpened!

    3 Canoes on 1 roof

Big time sorry for the long delay in replying and for not taking a photo. The two outside canoes pushed a little back and the middle one pushed a little forward worked perfectly and darn easy to set up. The other two canoeist think I'm brilliant and bought me a few beer so I hope they never see...

Steam Bending. What is a good heat source to make the steam?

Although this set-up was for scarfing in new stems on a cedar-canvas, I did use a much longer 1 1/2" pvc pipe for the gunnels. It worked very well using the rag at the top to adjust the steam flow. Three cheers for a $4 Value Village kettle with an 1 1/2" hole cut out of the top.

    3 Canoes on 1 roof

Thanks everyone, great ideas here. Some of these trips will be 600 - 700km long at 100 kmph so your ideas will be needed. Three buddy paddlers in solo canoes so nobody wants to be solo in their car on the drive there and back. I'll make sure they keep the speed down to 100 or I'll be a nervous...

    3 Canoes on 1 roof

I need/must get three 31" wide 16' long canoes on the roof of my truck. Two are gelcoat kevlars with aluminum and one is clear coat with carbon gunnels so gentle is a good idea. 2 is a piece of cake but 3? Any brilliant ideas? I can't afford a canoe trailer and no clue where to store one if I...
