West Branch of the Penobscot/Lobster Lake

I’m driving a WRX and they literally don’t come with spares anymore, not even a donut. I might get one this year but it’ll mean buying an OEM wheel and needing to do 5-wheel rotation to keep the 4WD happy. In the mean time I’m avoiding the Golden Road like a plague. It’s expensive enough that...

West Branch of the Penobscot/Lobster Lake

Sounds like a great trip. I’ve also been eyeing this one for August or early September, probably with the same outfitter vans (as slate roads scare my thin car tires).

    Allagash peak time advice?

I'm planning a solo trip up the Allagash Wilderness Waterway at a specific, can't-move week in July, and wondering if there's any specific advice for trying to navigate the river during its peak popularity. How bad is going to be finding a campsite? Should I think about packing both a tent and...

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

Really excited to read that report and very happy this was indeed possible.

Outing, 260426-29, Fish Pond, St Regis Canoe Wilderness

Drying out the boundary boots is a real problem. I’ve been hanging them but it often isn’t enough for the insides. Good pictures!

    Watches or Smartwatches for Tripping?

Definitely getting too focused on my technology is a concern. I'm already spending a lot of time looking through a camera and maybe don't really need another screen.

    Watches or Smartwatches for Tripping?

Does anyone use an Apple Watch or a Garmin Watch (or something else) on trips? I normally wear an Apple Watch Ultra (which I used for fitness paddling over the winter) but it doesn't really seem to have the battery for long trips, and the maps are fairly iffy. I'm thinking about one of the...

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

If I’m being honest, I don’t think that the dry suit was really necessary on this trip. None of the fishermen I ran into were even wearing paddling jackets. I was mostly wearing the suit and lightweight long underwear, with no midlayer this trip and it was still warm. But it is nice to be dry...

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

I honestly might just use it as an excuse to pickup a lighter canoe at some point. The Northstar Solo in IXP I've really intended to be my north maine woods trip boat where I'm not portaging but I am slamming into the occasional rock. I didn't have that problem here.

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

I'll caution that the channel is smaller than it looks in that photo. The starting section really almost looks like just more forest. But I think it could be done if you don't mind dragging.

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

Thanks for all the advice. I spent 1 night at Ochre and had a good time. I wrote a whole trip report over here. TL;DR on paddling between Ochre and Fish pond: I think you could do it if you figured out how to get past the first 100 yards or so. There was plenty of water. But there were so many...

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

After posting here looking for advice, I set out to spend a couple days solo in the ADK, trying to get in a first trip just after ice out, and make a first trip to the Adirondacks in around 20 years. I might have been a little late for that, but with scheduling conflicts, I was determined to...

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

I’m running a larger boat and not packing light… but sounds like something I could try Day 2.

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

I’m re-arranging a little, but my current plan is half a day driving, then Little Clear to St. Regis then over the fish dam to Ochre by nightfall. It looks like there’s two sites on Ochre which I’m guessing will be fine in the middle of the week when it’s literally freezing at night. I might...

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

I’m tempted by the idea of paddling a normally unavailable route to Ochre pond (and I’m hammocking when solo). Is your preference for St. Regis Pond due to it being more wilderness?

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

I’ve ended up with a free day and half next week, and want to get value out of my new dry suit. Thus, trying to plan a cold April overnight within, say, 5 hours of Boston. It looks like most of Maine and New Hampshire isn’t iced out yet, so the Adirondacks seems like a good candidate. Anyone...
