    Time to Gear Up

I didn’t get much canoe camping this season, but appreciated my collection of evolved camping paraphernalia, but also I learned where my gear is deficient. I already replaced my Helinox Chair Zero, which was tippy, uncomfortable and hard to get out of (funny I never noticed these deficiencies...

    New Paddle Impressions

Used the new Badgertail for a week in BWCA and loved it. Went paddling the other day and used my ZRE bent shaft Whitewater. I’m now in a good position to compare the two. The Badgertail is easy on the shoulders and much quieter than the ZRE WW. I can hear the sucking/slurping noise very...

    Boiled Linseed Oil

I’m have a nearly full can of BLO. No hemp oil, no Alaskan grey goose oil. Why isn’t BLO good for a wood paddle? I do have coconut oil. Would that work? It gets thick when cooled, so it might hang in the fibers?

    Stinky Canoe Pack

My old waxed canvas canoe pack stinks bad. The water it sits in hasn’t always been “pure,” for sure. Anyone have some tricks for getting the stink out? I once had a rain slicker that sat rolled on my cantle for several years. Smelled awful. Tried washing and it didn’t work.

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I find fitness resolutions are best made this time of year, before the decadent and sedentary moons arrive. Keeping in shape is much easier than getting in shape. I’m no where near my peak condition, but im better than I was. Next paddling season is going to be a big one, but only if I work...

    Paddle Blade Edge Protection

My new Badgertail paddle is showing a little wear on the tip from some rocky landings. Does anyone dip their tip or run epoxy around it?

    Non-Slip Camp Shoes

I’ve been using some lightweight waterproof high tops for camp shoes and they’re good except they are like wearing ice skates on damp rocks. I fell last year and nearly lost it this year on several occasions. So, Im wondering what folks depend on to keep upright and dry in camp.

    September BWCA Trip

Not much sun on my week long trip to Disappointment Lake. It was only one longvportage in, and the traffic was non-stop. On the third day, I’m reading a book to my dog when a float plane makes multiple passes around the lake, then buzzes my campsite twice. Then, he lands and taxis up to my...

    Pot Dipper

My teapot has silicone dipped handles that are losing their insulation. Anyone know a good product to restore the insulated properties? Gotta remember to rotate the handles away from the twig gap.

    Over Maximum Load

Just weighed my gear. While I successfully whittled it down to two loads, with my dog, the total is 10 lbs over the maximum load for my canoe. I was hoping to stay in the 80-85% of max range. Also important, without that 3rd pack, I have no idea how to trim the load with the dog. Might need...

    Badger Finally!

My Badgertail paddle arrived after sitting in the Milwaukee USPS center for 6 days. I was getting nervous. I still have a week to learn to use it before heading north. First thing I noticed was the relatively narrow shaft. Im wondering if this is a positive for my crappy hands. Bad hands...

    Pill Box

I’ve never really found a good pill case. I used a small waterproof tackle box; it is heavy and overkill on capacity, but it does stay closed and I’ve not had a leak. I only need about 5 or 6 compartments. Anyone out there take pills with them on trips? What do you use?

    Self Inflating Pads

Looking to replace my self-inflating sleeping pad. It’s never been wide enough for comfort. I’m sold on the self-inflation feature, but most newer pads don’t use that method. I read a recent thread about sleeping pads and lots of recommendations but no self inflators. I want a 25” wide...

    Pre-trip Tune Up

We’re contemplating a BWCA trip in two weeks. Glad my dog is a laid back canoe veteran. Thinking about leaving the double blade at home. The single blades are definitely easier on my hands. Hands are my weakest factor this year. I’ve been testing various compression gloves and braces. Found...

A New Challenge: Cats in a Canoe?

Anyone heard of a canoeing cat? My next project?

    Quiet Blade Shape

I was out paddling some still water at sunrise. Bass boats were here and there, and I tried to pass without disturbing the water, no noise. It became a game, getting as close as I could before the fisherman noticed me. My blade is a bent shaft ZRE WW, not real quiet, no matter how careful with...

    NW Solo Tested Loaded

Finally got my new tripper out to get the feel with a known load. With 5 gallons of lake astern, the load is about 300 lbs, about 35-40 lbs under my summertime one-week tripping load with Bogan. Maximum recommended load is 340. Not as fast as the Magic, it’s still fast enough and a good...

Got the wife to ditch the yak

With my current physical condition, Im not able to load, unload her kayak. As a bonus, we can take both dingoes (although it’s a pain since they both want to ride with me).

    Things that have Improved

I just added a new set of Yakima KeelOver cradles for my load bars. I can now carry two canoes on the roof rack if need be. The older cradles were purchased a few years ago. I noticed the new cradles are more rigid and fit the bars better. Any canoeing equipment you’ve been happily surprised...
