    East coast beaver attacks.

I found this out in seventh grade. We had a bat in the classroom that bit the brave guy who tried to catch it. The rest of the class took out our revenge on the bat by smashing it into oblivion. This prevented any testing for rabies and our classmate had to endure the rabies shots. I can see...

the physics behind a canoe's pivot point

I could probably test this by myself too. I could probably find the CLR by locating the spot where a draw stroke perpendicular to the boat with the paddle blade parallel to the keel will create a perfect sideslip. According to the article on the peripatetic pivot point, this should move forward...

    Greetings from N Central FL!

You could take a trip in the salt water areas of the Everglades where I don't think there are gators. They do have American Crocodiles though, but I don't believe there has been any fatalities yet. Costa Rica has the same crocodiles and they do have fatalities. I think I read that they become...

the physics behind a canoe's pivot point

That is the bottom line. There are other variables too. While your COG will dictate how your boat is trimmed, boat movement is also affected how much you lean and any wind present.

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

When I first moved to Alaska my wife and I were on a ski trail waiting for a moose to get out of the way before we could go on. A guy came skiing up and said, "they're just like farm animals and they will get out of your way. He then banged his poles together to scare it, skied on and the moose...

    East coast beaver attacks.

I think rabies is on the rise. A guy was attacked by a black bear not far from me this winter that was captured on a doorbell camera. A neighbor came out and shot the bear which tested positive for rabies. About a week ago my neighbor came over to warn me about a rabid raccoon a couple doors...

    East coast beaver attacks.

About a week ago two guys were attacked by a beaver on Lake George, NY. Earlier this spring a boy was attacked on a New Jersey river, and this wasn't the only case in Jersey. In all cases authorities believe the beavers had rabies, I'm not sure if this was confirmed or not. At any rate I would...

How to bail out when kneeling

The easiest fix would be to raise your seat enough that your feet will slide out easily. A higher seat will make sitting more comfortable too. You do need to make sure your boat is stable enough to allow you to do this. What boat are you paddling?

the physics behind a canoe's pivot point

I've never noticed the difference speed has on where the pivot point is when it comes to sideslipping but I think it is something you adjust to with paddle placement and angle. If you are solo in a boat, the pivot point will be close to your body. When dead in the water, a draw perpendicular to...

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

I guess eagles killing heron is more common than I thought. I witnessed it last fall. Sometime you have a day like that when the wildlife is very active. As far as the loon eating that brook trout, in 35 years tripping in Ak. with loons being very common I had never seen one come to the surface...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

My wife feels the same. She has been in Ak. for the past month, which is where our Malecite is. She had mentioned that we will be selling our canoes to a guy doing work on the house. He wanted the Malecite, but she told him "that one's not for sale. When I asked her why she wanted to keep it...

    Poll: Rudders

I think it would only be worthwhile on a boat used exclusively on big water. Even then you may only need it in a following sea, which is the only situation where I haven’t found a solution for, but a rudder would certainly help.

    The "V" Hull

Yeah, it’s not a night and day difference and I don’t have another hull similar to the Malecite without the V for comparison. The reason it carves better may have more to do with the shape of the stem then the V but my hunch is that it is both. Same thing for tracking. One thing I do know for...

    The "V" Hull

I recently bought a kevlar Mad River Malecite and have been paddling it the last few days. It reminded me of how much I like a V hull. I think it is a great design feature. When paddled with the boat level I think it tracks better then it would without the V. I also think it carves better when...

    Poll: Rudders

I see a rudder being useful in a boat like the Kruger Sea Wind, which has one. You can use that boat where you would use a sea kayak and a rudder would be very helpful in a trailing sea. I don't know if it's a "hybrid" boat or not, but on a BIG open water it would be the way to go.

    Photo of the day

I made the cover of the Copper River Journal with a canoe on the Gulkana River back in the mid 90s. But you are right, it doesn't happen often.

Cannibalism is Bad for Your Health

When consuming a member of your crew it is recommended to cook to an internal temperature of 165f.

    Poll: Rudders

I won't be adding a rudder to any of my boats, although I can see their usefulness. Over the last few years I've learned to use my hull as a rudder and it's changed my paddling.

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

I used to get the best mileage with my 2002 Ford Ranger with a boat on the roof. Then again the only all highway driving I did with that vehicle was with a boat on the roof. I'd say that if it gets you on the water more it's worth the downsides of it.

    Welcome flag

I like snappers idea. This way you can decide if you want to share with a particular group or not. Probably rare in most places, but a group may come by that are inebriated or undesirable and you may not want to extend an invite. I don't remember ever offering anyone to share a site, but the...
