    Bell Starfire

A buddy of mine has a Starfire (at least I think it is a Starfire), but it is a solo and royalex - good tripping or "big-boy" boat.

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

To each his own. I have been trying to master the double blade for a couple of years now, but in a sea kayak, not a canoe. We rent a house on the beach for two weeks each summer and this is the first year that I didn't even bring a canoe - just my sea kayak. I use a 210 Werner Shuna paddle with...

    Getting in and Getting out

I find it much easier to get up and out from a kneeling position. Lean forward with a hand on each gunnel. Bring one knee up so you have a foot on the boat. With those three points of contact centered in the boat you can get your body up and your other foot out over the gunnel on to shore. I...

    Getting in and Getting out

You are going to get in right in front of the seat. Lean over the boat with one hand on each gunnel. Trying to keep you weight centered, bring you first foot into the boat. Once you feel stable on those three points of contact bring your other foot in. Stay low and keep your body centered in the...

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

Definitely - it needs to be a group effort or it becomes catering. That's no fun.

When do you use float bags?

We were both kneeing. The boat is set up with thigh straps that would have helped, but I don't usually put them in anymore. It's bad enough getting my feet out from under the bench seat. The straps would just be one more thing to get hung up on.

When do you use float bags?

He was at the top, but not at the bottom. Doesn't look like I am on the seat either. We hit a rock at the bottom that knocked us both off our seats.

When do you use float bags?

There are end bags in my Mohawk tandem that stay in all the time. They don't need to be there most of the time, but I am too lazy to take them out. The center bag only goes in when I need it - like this drop that got my partner grabbing the gunnels...

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

I agree that it is nice sitting down at the table for a meal all at once. There definitely is a sense of camaraderie to it. It is not without its challenges. You need to accommodate people with food allergies, food restrictions, or food preferences. I like meat, so it is a bit of a...

How is this for camp food

Turkey dinner for Canadian Thanksgiving - I like that. It is pretty amazing what you can cook in camp if you don't mind lugging it all out there.

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

On most of the trips I do, everyone takes turns cooking groups meals. Just curious how common that is.

    Back in the Coho..... Finally.

The ultimate poling boat. you lucked out getting that boat. Did you buy it new or find it used.

How is this for camp food

The trip was open to all, but it ended up being all men. We usually have at least one woman (like you), but she is on a month-long trip in the Yukon. The club also does base camp trips around New England and the ADK, and those get a good mix of women and men. On this trip, I think the lack a...

How is this for camp food

The best thing to have along on a trip is a good cook, and we had several on this trip. ;)

How is this for camp food

The Big Daddy skillet. Lisa Dehart did a video on the Big Daddy. This is the 20" version and it is stainless steel. We did breakfast for 8 in that one pan - bacon, sausage, homefries and eggs. Didn't make it into my picture album, but here is Dan adding the eggs. The other thing that I had...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I love my Yellowstone Solo. If I could have just one boat, that would be it.

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

Could be - the rapid has changed a lot over the years. "Oh Sh!t Rock" is in the middle of the rapid now, so you can't go right down the middle without bouncing around a lot - its one side or the other.

Roof rack that can hold two canoes

I have 50" bars and can get 2 canoes on (and a kayak). I do need to put the boats on edge, but I prefer that to having the bar sticking out past the sides of the car.

    Open Boats at Zoar Gap

I saw Jim this spring at the Knightville section of the Westfield. I'm pretty sure he was paddling his Outrage. He is in the far right in this picture: There are a couple of eddies on the left leading up to the Gap. If it is busy you need to stop there to queue up and wait your turn. There is...
