    Indian Lake Islands trip 2026

Since her father, @themadindian, has featured her in several photos and videos on this site, I'm sure that we would all recommend that themadpapoose should join the site so she can receive the profound benefit of our consistent unanimity as to whether to buy a kneeling, sitting or pack canoe...

Indisputable proof that kayaks have always been clown cars

Not to be a Bozo, but a former admin here, Grimaldi, suggested (a capella) that this thread could become a circus if we posted pictures of our dark-hulled, radar-equipped, ocean-going, private super yachts. Thank goodness the kayaker is blocking it. It's a nice photo, which you will...

    Article: Camp Rutabaga 2026

"Wait… Camp RUTABAGA??? WHAT???" "Instructional sessions are available for paddlers of all skill levels, including “Kayaking for Canoeists” and vice-versa. There’s a class on Moving Water, which includes all varieties of boats. There’s even a class for Canoe Poling, and an Introduction to...

I'm not taking sides, but I will observe that polygamy is illegal for spouses but necessary for canoes.

Says he who also has an Epic surfski. Seriously, I think a sufski hull is epicene—it looks like and can function as either a kayak or canoe depending upon whether one uses a double or single blade. Put iakos and an ama on it, and it would be indistinguishable from an outrigger canoe.

You can take the guy out of the truck, but you can't take the truck out of the guy.

Indisputable proof that kayaks have always been clown cars

How the scene was filmed: https://orionmagazine.org/article/wish-out-of-water/ "It’s a delightful little set-piece, little diminished by the fact that it’s a fiction: Flaherty put his cast into the kayak one by one, cutting the footage together using the intertitles."

    Indian Lake Islands trip 2026

Don't tell @tketcham about double blading a Firebird. Your daughter should sign up for the Pine Barrens Functional Freestyle Symposium and try a Firebird, June Bug and Flashfire with single stick teachers. I thought that one guy—was it Mike?—was on a small inflatable raft.

World's deadliest river: 2 meters wide, 65 meters deep

I think "deadliest" refers to the ratio of folks who fall into the deepest part of The Strid and drown, which is claimed to be 100%. Of course, no one can prove that, and there have only been about five such definitely known events since William de Romilly. It makes sense that if you fall or...

    Indian Lake Islands trip 2026

Keith, thanks for that interesting report, pics and video. Very windy. (Not you - mother Nature.) It makes sense that a much narrower Rapidfire would be faster than a Shearwater, given the waterlines are about 24" vs. 28" and the Rapidfire would have less water friction and drag because of a...

Is that Indian Lake in the Adirondacks? Who paddled which canoe? They both look familiar.

Videos from Down the Bloodvein and Back

The heavyset guy bow lining the canoe looks to me like Ray Goodwin, the famous UK canoeist, canoe instructor, trip leader, author and YouTuber. This seems to be confirmed by the blog of his expedition partner Paul Kirtley, who has published photos of a Ray Goodwin trip down the Bloodvein in...

Videos from Down the Bloodvein and Back

Some questions, Alan. What kind of camera did you use to video, and how and where did you attach it? It's not the now-ubiquitous GoPro on the head. When you ran rapids, did you sit or kneel and did you use a bent or straight paddle? In rewatching the videos, did you find many things that you...

Could be. But none of the actual known deaths had on life jackets or rescue teams on shore.

World's deadliest river: 2 meters wide, 65 meters deep

There is a section of the River Wharfe in Yorkshire, England, called The Strid. The Wharfe is about 25 meters wide as it flows through the countyside, but at The Strid it squeezes down to less than two meters. It is said that the river essentially turns 90° on its side, and its depth has been...
