I think it would only be worthwhile on a boat used exclusively on big water. Even then you may only need it in a following sea, which is the only situation where I haven’t found a solution for, but a rudder would certainly help.

I see a rudder being useful in a boat like the Kruger Sea Wind, which has one. You can use that boat where you would use a sea kayak and a rudder would be very helpful in a trailing sea. I don't know if it's a "hybrid" boat or not, but on a BIG open water it would be the way to go.

I only get on the board when it's warm enough to swim and I plan on getting wet. I guess I figure that if I wouldn't wear a pfd swimming why would I wear one on the board. Plus I started SUP in Hawaii where no-one wears one, and that's offshore in the ocean and in the surf.

Do you use a leash? If not, you would certainly need a PFD.

I'm pretty PFD compliant, but I don't wear one on a paddle board. I am attached to the board with a leash. I consider the board to be my PFD.
