Why am I the only one in a Canoe?

A GRB Classic. I have a Northstar Trillium and I wanted something that's better for bigger water. I haven't got a date yet for when it will be done, other than the ambiguous "mid-summer," but I'll let you know.

Why am I the only one in a Canoe?

Thanks for sharing Jm. I just turned 46, so I've got a few years on you but I guess I'm also (barely) in the under 50 solo canoe crowd. Even with my age group I find a lot of people are hooked on their phones, and I get mixed responses when I say I'll be out of cell phone service for a while...

    Light weight vs strong laminate

The most prominent scratch here is my most recent cosmetic work on my Blacklite Trillium. A rock got sneaky on me in a 1+ rapid, I went right and took the rock on the side. Bounced right off and kept going. I wet launch but have gotten over being gentle on it, so far it's taken everything I've...

Why am I the only one in a Canoe?

Ha…I started on a monstrosity of a rec kayak, and there’s no way I’m going back. A pack canoe with a double paddle was a good gateway boat. I am open to keeping a touring kayak on the side, just haven’t found the right one yet. But I certainly won’t mention it here.

    Hello from Eastern North Carolina

Glad they’re getting used. You’re certainly not going to get encouragement to get rid of boats here.

    Hello from Eastern North Carolina

Welcome! That’s quite the collection of canoes you have.

Why am I the only one in a Canoe?

I got a chuckle out of this, but I think you're exactly right. Definitely (for us) an example of "careful what you wish for." I'm also the only canoeist in my group. I suspect you're correct and I am probably a small exception. I paddle canoes in Scouts when I was younger, but the first...

    Solo Wee Lassie

That was quick, congrats and I’m glad you like it.

    Delaware Water Gap Day Trip

Thanks! Glad my report helped and I hope you get out on the Delaware, it’s worth the trip. I really like my Trillium and it’s a good boat for this type of paddle. It’s nimble enough to handle light rapids and doesn’t feel like a slog when I hit the more open stretches. The Blacklight held up too.

An extra trippy Merlin canoe strip build

And I was so hoping for a sparkle paddle. Oh well. Thanks for all the work you put into this build report.

    Delaware Water Gap Day Trip

My wife and I did a day paddle in the Delaware Water Gap for my birthday this year. We’ve previously paddled lower sections of this river closer to where we live, but this was the first time we made the drive to this section. We were certainly not the only ones who thought a morning paddle was a...

Why am I the only one in a Canoe?

I had no idea solo canoes were even a thing when I started looking at upgrading my kayak. I forget how I stumbled across the concept, but it was exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. I so rarely see solo canoes around here that I could list what I've seen. I don't see a lot of canoes...

Why am I the only one in a Canoe?

I paddled the Delaware Water Gap recently and I was surprised to see more canoes than I usually do at more local paddles. Nothing fancy, an Old Town Tandem and an Old Town Next, but it was good to see. I think availability of entry level canoes is a barrier, particularly solo canoes, though...

West Branch of the Penobscot/Lobster Lake

I like the report, thanks for sharing. It sounds like a fantastic trip. I'll certainly check out the video later.

    Mini Campers

I like the idea of a small camper like that until I start looking at prices. That cools my excitement rather quickly.

    Dreaded Tennis Elbow, Mark II

Ykn my wife had injured herself frequently excersizing over the past few years, she often approaches excersize with more enthusiasm then technique. We’re in our 40’s, so it’s catching up to her, but she is learning. As we get less young it’s important to keep moving, but it’s just as important...

    Tahitian style paddling

All sound advice, thanks lowangle. I'll certainly be referring back to this when I get out again, hopefully next weekend. It did not occur to me to try this stroke with my otter tail paddle, I've been focusing primarily on my bent shaft. I'll have to give that a try as well. I have a Bending...

    Tahitian style paddling

I watched this over the winter before I got a chance to try out paddling with a bent shaft, and it didn't really click for me. Instead I found another video that walked through the mechanics in a more detailed fashion. That was going fine, but after some time on the water I watched John P's...

    Hello from Arkansas

Welcome! The Buffalo looks like a fun place to paddle. I'm not certain I've heard of Big Piney, but I'm a long way from Arkansas. You'll have to let us know how you like the Wilderness when it shows up.

    "Door mat" for tent entrance

I've been to the Pine Barrens for the historic village and a short hike, but I've never paddled there. It is certainly sandy and (over the summer) annoyingly buggy. It's not that far from me, it's definitely on the list. Enjoy.
