Funny ! Just today I was setting up a router, to bead and cove ! Your set up looks good. Sometimes you can't avoid tear out, If you take a quick look at the grain of the strip, before running it through the router, you can avoid that. Yes that strip is usable.

That was how I made the patterns for the flotation chambers, on my first few. It worked. I glassed both sides Haven't had an issue in over 30 years. Jim

It's a Bob tailed, Bruce Kunz 38 Spl. Bob tailing the 38, so I can get by with a few shorter strips. It won't change the water line, but it could accomodate a rudder. Have the forms up, working on the strips now. Jim

People who kept track used to say 1 1/2gal. of Epoxy resin, for a typical solo canoe. I'm sure I go over that, with an extra layer up to about the 3" water line, plus flotation chambers. Both I don't build without. Jim

What ever finish, you choose ? Here is a trick, I came up with, to prevent finish, from running down the hull. I know many will tape, and that is OK ! I built these simple stands, that easily store when not in use

I'll make a stab at the reason for the square stern. It would increase the maneuverability of the hull, making quick turns easier, especially for the smaller paddler. I'd also guess there would only be a small amount of lost flotation. Jim
