    Photo of the day

This is the outflow of the fifth largest spring in the world, the beginning of the River Sorgue, somewhat downstream from the source. I was supposed to go canoeing here. Unfortunately, I am here for three days but the canoe rental places do not open for another 10 days. I am staying literally...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

Is that what happened. I miss HOOP. I learned a lot from him.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

I think Benson and Memaquay are onto something here. From what I can tell, these influencers have more influence on getting younger people to try new activities. It’s a different world out there.

Thoughts on buying a dedicated loaner

I do have a loaner, an old Mad River Explorer in Royalex. I loaned it to a couple who wanted to try canoeing. But not with me and not led by me. I made sure they had paddles and pdfs. We have mostly lakes, flat water here. It seems to me this would be a good way to get other folk interested...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

There are no good campsites on the part of the Mégiscane I am reporting on. I did not pass any good campsites. You are seeing the best of the best. There are good sites on the Mégiscane but not on the stretch I paddled.

Canoe cover for epoxy canoe with no gelcoat?

Those canoe covers look great. But in Florida, there would ants’ and wasps’ nest built inside them within a few days. An unpleasant surprise when one removes the cover.

    Mégiscane River, Québec

True. The flames surrounded my hand, but I ended up with basically just a sunburn. I was on bare rock, inches from the river. I never light anything near my tent.

    Keeping fish simple

Yes, he chewed the fish. He was French, if that explains anything. And he was much older than the college students goldfish era.

    Keeping fish simple

My canoe partner from long ago caught a couple of little book trout with his hands and ate them raw, while standing in the water.

    Where have we all paddled?

The reason I limited it to open boats was because of the nature of this forum. Or at least limited to single blade. I know there is much discussion about what constitutes a canoe, but you all have the general idea. I had a suspicion that we were all over the place and that seems to be the case...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

No-see-ums chase me into the tent right in the middle of that beautiful sunset. The fading light still permeates the tent walls. I am gradually becoming more familiar with the vast array of electronics that seem to excessively weigh down my packs. Much of the time I would rather throw them...

The Spork, Do you use one?

Some years ago, I bought a couple of sporks. Used them tripping because I was going very light weight. I liked them, one at a time, obviously. They are bright colored which makes it more difficult to leave them behind. When I commented on them positively on myccr, I was laughed out of the...

    Where have we all paddled?

I forgot Virginia and Maine. And if we are counting riding in dugouts, Costa Rica and Indonesia.

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

I loved the way you set this up with the goals. Excellent. Such a vivid and well-written account — really captures the experience.

    Where have we all paddled?

In the interest of helping with starting new threads; I was wondering how widespread our canoe (not kayak, not raft) trips have taken us. For large countries such as the US, Canada, or Australia, you might want to identify the state or province. Glenn, if you can think of a catchier title to...

    Mégiscane River, Québec

A Perfect Day I woke to dank and dreary skies. Cold. Scuttled back into my sleeping bag and slept more. I was awakened by loud construction noises that seemed close, yet I could see no sign of them. The instrusion went on far longer than my tolerance and I resolved to leave the island the next...

    Trip Report: Thunersee, Switzerland

Glenn, you’ll have to ask Aslowhand about the boat, as I know very little about it. The swans here are not annoying. They swim elegantly and grace the lake with their beauty. We watched others feeding them, which is not allowed. (Hah!) Then they look like domestic geese reaching out with their...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

So just this morning at the guesthouse I’m staying at, a woman from Oregon, was telling me about her canoe experiences. She and her husband both had separate unpleasant canoe experiences and were considering switching to kayaks. With this thread fresh in my mind, I explained how just a few basic...
