Poll: How Old Are You? - Poll closed. Respond in 2026 age poll.

Hit 90 in February. The weather is getting warmer and I'm itching to get out on a lake and get started getting in condition for some extended paddle trips in BC Canada this Summer. Might even consider the Bowren Lake circuit in early Fall to enjoy the colors that are present then.

    Pillows

I use an REI nylon stuff sack that is fleece lined. Use it for some of my clothing and then turn it wrong side out to expose the fleece and put the clothes back in to make a pillow. Gave my first one to a grandson because I thought my camping days were over but I got going canoeing again and...

    Powdered peanut butter...

I know that this is an old thread but I just saw this use of peanut butter in hot cereal on a video yesterday. This morning I added a tsp of crunch style in my oatmeal peach instant pack and it will be my choice of morning canoeing meal from now on. Who'd have thought it would taste so good.

    Life jacket suggestions

Just out of curiosity, I called the USCG this morning and asked about my Mustang inflatable PFD expiration date. As long as the green shows in the window on CO2 cartridge I'm good to go. There is no expiration date on my vest, just the manufacture date. Also just checked another source, a...

    Got it up there

I've gone to a lighter canoe but you can only use that solution so many times till you are "walking on water" or swimming to avoid the dreaded weight.

    Got it up there

I just read where they discovered that gravity has been increasing ever year since you started canoeing.

    PFD avoidance issues

I have two Mustang inflatables and an NRS Ninja PFD. The plus for inflatables is that they are comfortable to wear on a hot day, not so for the Ninja. On a colder day I appreciate the extra warmth even though it takes away from paddling comfort. The Mustang comes in the manual "pull the lanyard"...

First paddle, first outdoor swim of the season

I once paddled my canoe with a duck decoy when my paddle got blown overboard. Hard to top your "bad day exerience" and I wish you a quick and inexpensive recovery from this memorable day!

    Kevin Wild's 42 day, 650 K, Labrador Solo Journey

Thanks for posting this. I started watching it this morning and watched the whole thing! Incredible photography and I almost felt like I was in the boat with him.

    Getting in and Getting out

That is impressive! I'll have work on that one.

    Getting in and Getting out

At 90 I am not as flexible as I used to be but I manage to board the canoe successfully by using the "Head in the middle" as I hold the gunwales. It works fine as long as I keep low as I do it.

    Signs of Spring?

Have had Robins showing up and the trees are starting to show leaves. I can't wait to don my new farmer john wetsuit and hit a lake to start the new season.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

I commend your attitude! All I have to do is put up with old age but you have a lot of serious compications that would excuse your giving up. Is there something in that Alaskan existence that makes you tougher?

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

I think I learned a lesson regarding preparting for my canoeing this season. Last year my ten or twelve one and two hour work outs just prior to the Bowron Lake outing was pretty inadequate. This year I'm already looking at starting my prep next month. No ice on the local lakes and a wet suit on...

Essay: "Canoes Are Better Than Kayaks"

When I paddled a sea-kayak it was usaually for day trips or short overnight trips. The good part was that it was fast and rain and rough water were not problems, nor cold weather because I always wore a dry suit. Plenty of room in boat for what gear I chose for camping. My switch to canoeing...

    What's out West?

Go to Ross Lake Resort on the internet and it lists the options and prices for accessing Ross Lake from Diablo Lake/Hwy 20. Look at the information at "North Cascades National Park Backcountry Permits for Ross Lake rules.

    What's out West?

Access to Ross Lake from Hozemeen is closed until further notice and has been for some time. Access from Diablo Lake requires a paid shuttle over the dam to get to the Ross Lake.

    Solitude isn't for everyone

From childhood to senior age, I've always been comfortable doing things alone. Not that I am anti-social, but solo activities give me a choice of what and when to do things. Some activities I participate require a lot ot patience, like duck hunting or steelheading and I don't feel it boring...

    Wish me luck.

I did the Bowron some 20 years ago in a Solitude and it worked out fine. It was a bit faster than the Packer I now own but heavier. If you don't have a cart you can rent one at Bowron Lodge or buy a nice light weight one from Suspenz online. Sometimes they have returns which is a good deal as...

    What got you into canoeing?

When I retired at age 60 I started sea kayaking, I loved the experience. After about five years I decieded to buy a cheap canoe for duck hunting and it opened a new area of interest. Sold my sea kayak and ended up up with a Clipper Solitude whick I had until last Summer. Now I am 89 and have a...
