    Hello from central Massachusetts

Mr Blackwater, Welcome from upstate NY By any chance have you paddled Quabbin reservoir? I have little knowledge of it, MDB is always looking for new interesting spots to paddle

Alan's Bloodvein II Canoe Strip Build

Gamma, I faced a similar hull flex seat install dilemma when I built my DY Special... On that hull, my seat support cleats were positioned well below the severe tumblehome, the only way to install the seat was to flex the shear line outward. I had already epoxied on my gunwales, between the...

    site member activity

Glenn, Is there any way you can (in your copious free time) post some data on member activity levels? Gamma mentioned in the "how old are you" poll that there seems to be less activity than the previous poll, despite a considerable rise in membership. I am wondering how the rising membership...

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

Little tupper lake has early season access and you could even go back to Rock Pond, or beyond. Rock rarely gets busy even on warm holiday weekends. Keep in mind St Regis is trout water, and a lot of early season fishermen may be there too.

    Seen This Type of Canoe?

He still has the boat, yes, it is a Monfort design, a Snowshoe 12. Complete with kevlar roving. He rarely uses it now, being married with two boys. He has other boats that suit his current lifestyle better, and he's currently working to build a few more carbon hulls using a Sawyer 17'9" Cruiser...

How Long Have We Been Chatting?

I want to take a moment and thank all those admins, past, present and no longer with us, for the fantastic job they have been doing!! This site has become, IMHO, the premier paddling forum in the US. And we have an extremely strong group of builders, always willing to help others... A...

How Long Have We Been Chatting?

Willis and I were making plans for a trip together... I was trying to remember the lineage of site operators, pretty sure there was someone between Willis and Robin. Some help Glenn? Or maybe Robin will chime in.

    Winter conversation

I've been visiting, hiking, camping, paddling in the ADK's all my life. While I agree that the modern Olympics would overwhelm Lake Placid and the surrounding towns, any subsequent increased visits would likely be relatively short lived. Witness the masses that fled to the ADK's during Covid...

    Seen This Type of Canoe?

My son built a 12 ft version when he was 12 years old, the plans were s a Christmas present that year. It weighed 10 lbs...

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Haha, my S-I-L made the same golf ball comments, and buffing? Yeah, not likely. We should just number these jokes. I'll drive it for ten years as is, takes the pressure off...no worries about parking lot dings!

Show us pictures of your canoe vehicle with boat(s)

Well, I can show the car and the racks, but no boats on top just yet. I picked up this totaled 2025 CR-V Hybrid for cheap, clear title, lots of hail damage. Repaired/replaced 2 tail lights, and a rear quarter window. My Thule Aero bars that were on my 2015 CR-V don't fit the 2025 CR-V, I would...

Alan's Bloodvein II Canoe Strip Build

I glassed my red kite with 6 oz glass and it was a breeze, easily conformed. I used carbon cloth two layers at once for the carbon copy kite and I had great difficulty to get the carbon to fully conform around and over the crease. With glass, no issue at all. And a warning about using glass...

Poll: How old are you - 2026 version

Happy birthday, Snapper! I turn 70 tomorrow, so I suppose we share birthday dates. Both my son-in-law and his dad also have a birthday tomorrow. What are the odds?

Removing registration stickers without damaging the finish.

Mineral spirits is pretty benign And believe it or not, baby oil removes lots of adhesives, very gently, I might add. Tougher stuff may respond to acetone, tougher yet hexanes. With any of these, of course, test them out in an obscure spot first.

    Bird Management

Does the carport have open rafters and soffits? It doesn’t take much time or money to box them in and eliminate the issue forever. I had the same problem when I first finished building our new house, left the carport unfinished in the spring and had bird condos everywhere. Side benefit to boxing...

Alan's Bloodvein II Canoe Strip Build

You're (and everyone else is too) forcing a curve into the strips in the off axis...the strip can't yield immediately, so it deflects orthogonally. The outer edge of the strip is in tension, and the inner edge in compression. With small deflections, the wood fibers can slip by each other to some...

Alan's Bloodvein II Canoe Strip Build

I've had that happen quite a few times...some strips will "buckle" or oil can out of plane between forms. I stressed about it, and waited a few days while I tried to think of a solution. Lo and behold, the problem fixed itself...The strain causing the buckling forced the wood grain to relax...

Shouldered Tumblehome (aka Shouldered Flare): Terminological History

Glen, Thanks for this...I'm always intrigued by the story behind whichever issue at hand. I've also heard the transition line on a shouldered tumblehome hull referred to as a"crease", quite apropos, especially with the Kite.

A New Seat for the Canoe

Congrats on coming to this side!! I’m 5’9” and the same weight as you, I’ve been bent shaft paddling forever with a 48” paddle, much better for me with higher cadence. Canoeing fast is a lot like cycling, higher cadence and lighter loading will be sustainable all day long, slower rates and...

Alan's Bloodvein II Canoe Strip Build

Looking great so far...I do like those purplish strips. Don't remember if you're planning on decks and/or bulkheads, but strategically placed colored poplar could be very unique and attractive as decks and bulkheads.
