OK...How about the Wenonah Wilderness solo?

I owned a Wilderness for a decade. It was in the tuffstuff layup, fairly heavy by today’s personal standard. I used it on the river and lakes around here. It worked. Not a tripper due to volume (especially with a dog). Mine had a noisy seat that tipped forward for knee paddling. The...

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

Hard to believe you’ve never heard of pasties. Pronounced “pass-tees”. The lumberjacks from Finnland or somewhere carried them in their shirt pockets for lunch. Filled with turnips and meat. The cafes cover them with gravy because they are typically dry as a camel’s hump. They’ll keep you...

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

No, I meant those turnip things, often covered in gravy. To be fair, Atikokan and International Falls probably aren’t the best Canada has to offer. Montreal was pretty good. Still, tell me a full on attack is coming and I’m going for tacos al pastor.

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

Might be best to flee to Mexico. Better climate, food. SW US might be best off for a bug out. Canada can’t compete in cuisine. Pasties are terrible! Give me a burrito any day!

Hello. We’re the same age, so rock on!

    Chest Loads

Last trip I double portaged rather than triple portaging. I’m hoping to do that again. Adjustments include adding chest loads. I’m not 100% sure I can do it, but the plan is to use a large fanny pack as a sling pack on my chest along with my camp pack and the canoe. This will contain my...

    Need New Food

I’m going with my dog. He’s not good for carrying stuff, but great at cleaning up and disposing of mistakes. I’m going with 100% freeze dried dinner meals to allow me to portage more, so weight matters. I am looking at more dried fruits. Took dried mangos last year and they were great, until...

    Need New Food

I’m starting to sort through gear and freeze dried provisions for a mid-May trip and feel like I need to shake things up for my lunches and snacks. Anyone have a secret munchable food item that doesn’t weigh a ton? I’m in a rut with gorp, jerky and powdered peanut butter. Thanks.

    Canoe Rack for Carport

I moved the P15 out. Sine the wood is so wet, I put some temporary end supports in there and will add screws after the wood seasons a little. EDM straps with eyelets.

    Canoe Rack for Carport

Learned a hard lesson the other night. High winds and I left my new T-formex Esquif P15 on saw horses under the car port. It blew over against some long handled ground tools, causing some linear dents. The gravel did the worst damage, little deep dents and scratches on the side, a few of the...

    Packing a 30 L Barrel

I have a barrel. I’m packing mostly freeze dried foods and my cook gear, stoves. I’m pretty sure if I packed it with staples and fresh foods it would e too heavy.

    Getting the paddle right.

Maiden voyage of the new Esquif P15 yesterday. Unfortunately, I forgot my cell phone so no photos. It was also Bogan’s first trip post surgery. He was happy to get on the water. The p15 has lots of room for him to stretch, and he laid across the hull (side to side) on his yoga mat. He...

    Ausable River camping rules.

I’d make the loops big enough to slip over the belt for smaller trunks.

    Got it up there

Who knew getting my back broke and shoulder separated would make me so weak? It’s like nothing ever seen before. Some people are saying getting hit by a car riding my bicycle made me STRONGER! My doctors said I made the quickest recovery they ever saw. The scale must be fake. Gravity is a hoax!

    Got it up there

My canoe outfitted weighs 63 lbs. I used to trip with a 68 lb. canoe, this feels heavier! Taking it out for its maiden voyage tomorrow. Maybe I’ll get stronger overnight.

Portage Pack Liner vs. Dry Bags in Portage Pack

I use smaller lightweight dry bags of different colors inside my packs. Helps me stay organized. Sleeping bag, tarp, clothes.

Here’s one I’ve used for trees many times. Very durable and very tree friendly. Lash cinch.

    Ausable River camping rules.

Yes, that’s not one I’d use on a tree. The smooth ones from a lash rope are better for that purpose, but I’d have to dig for a picture of one of those. The mohair saddle cinches (pictured) are way too pricey and important for trees.

    Ausable River camping rules.

Back in my Wyoming outfitting days, I often used the cinch from pack horses as tree savers. They did a fine job of protecting trees. Seems like a product like that would be promoted more in regulations, and by outfitters.
