Have you tried a pad that is not glued in place - something with rubber grip material on the bottom and/or a pad cut to fit snugly wedged from one gunnel to the other? I don't have any advice for what glue or tape to use, but if it were me I'd try to find a removable solution first.

IIRC, Mohawk advertised that their R-84 had vinyl on the inside surface and some other plastic on the outside surface so that outfitting their R-84 canoes could be done the same as for Royalex canoes, though gluing anything on the outside (such as skid plates?) could be more problematic.

Biotolerance is a separate issue from biophobia. Out in the wild wasp nests, fire ant mounds, and termites are tolerated as part of the environment but at home I grab a can of Bengal spray when cockroaches get in the house and sprinkle Amdro around when a fire ant mound pops up in the yard.

Aside from providing flotation in case of a capsize, filling any empty space with float bags so that the canoe is packed to the gunnels when paddling in windy conditions can help a little with deflecting wind over the canoe rather than the wind pushing on the inside as much.
